Will M Performance exhaust fit Active Hybrid 3?

Test drove an Active hybrid 3 yesterday, and came away impressed. Faster and better power delivery than 335 with the fuel economy of a 328.

However its too quiet.

Anybody know if the M Performance exhaust can be fitted to the hybrid 3?

Hmmm. You mean it might throw CEL's?

there's no way it'll throw CELs, it's too far down stream of an O2 sensor for that.

If you go to BMW's website and see what "works", only the 335i and 335xi fall under the exhaust section, so they may not "allow" it. But the nuts and bolts should line up, unless someone went under the activehybrid to verify a different exhaust routing because of the battery...

So.... sounds like it will work then.

I would think that if the parts line up and it fits the same as the exhaust would on a 335, then it should work fine.

Not sure if there would be a problem with the hybrid computer programming not liking the exhaust though.

Although, the MPE is basically just a noise maker. I don't think it makes any power. So should work me thinks...

Exhaust appears the same, but maybe someone with a better eye for the 335i exhaust can verify.

Yes, I noticed the quieter exhaust too when I drove the AH3 back to back with the 335i. However, it no longer bothers me. Depending on driving style, the motor may be completely off, so you'll have some REAL quiet there

Here's what it looks like underneath from a 335i M Perf Exhaust, it should clear an AH3 judging from SamS's picture...hope this helps:

Interesting. So I guess that is part of the battery system that is hanging down directly behind the axle cross members?

You also have a clamp on your pipe, is that where they cut it to install the PE?

I took a look at realoem.com and the exhaust system of the 335i/AH3 is identical, except that they use different mid-pipes after 9/2012 production.

The 335i now uses P/N 18307646996.
The AH3 now uses P/N 18308608515.

Yes, the clamps are where they cut it...the battery should be on the right, unsure what that is...

I think it'll mate up just fine, give it a try!

On my car, the hybrid battery is right behind the rear axle. I think it's the black box hanging down, not visible on your car.

Partially because I'm intrigued, partially trying to help you guys out, I went and took a Pano Series of pictures down below...from driver's left to passenger right:

So first thoughts...my battery is def on the right (above) picture. I checked in the trunk and that's where it is, so unsure where AH3's battery is, but should be behind the metal heat shield you see on the far right.

Additionally, though I'm a big believer in how awesome it sounds, but seeing how rusty it looks at the welds after only 1 winter (albeit, CT had nearly 40 inches of snow in one weekend, and they were spraying salt on the grounds), I'm going to venture to say that it might be better to wait for an aftermarket alternative that has higher grade steel?

I don't care if it rusts through since I'm golden for 6 or so years, but others might...

I am glad it looks like the exhaust fits, on another performance note, if any other AH3 members are reading, Burger motor sports confirmed that the stage 1 tune they offer does work with the AH3 and that there is no reason why the stage 2 wouldnt work either....

Therefore, if the stage 2 tune + downpipe = 370whp, with the extra hybrid power could that be 400whp???

The AH3 actually has three batteries, including one where yours is. The one that is likely impeding a Perf exhaust clamp is indicated by the arrow in my pic below. The circled area is where the clamp likely needs more clearance than what is available.

I personally would not risk any kind of aftermarket tune on the AH3. The DME and other control modules are very sophisticated on the AH3, and unless Burger etc., has specifically tried their tune on an AH3, it is likely to throw codes galore.

SamS - you can flip the clamp onto the otherside of the tubing...no?

Just rotate it to the other direction?

Possibly. I'd have to take another look underneath to see if there is clearance on that other side.

You must not have read my post completely...

"Burger motor sports confirmed that the stage 1 tune they offer does work with the AH3 and that there is no reason why the stage 2 wouldn't work either"

Too each their own. Some people are scared of "sophisticated" electronics and some are not. Some wish to modify some enjoy the stock look & feel.

No, I read your post. They "confirmed" it, how? Especially when they say there's "no reason why the stage 2 wouldn't work either" leads me to believe they have never tested one (either) on a AH3.

Terry Burger the owner of Burger Motorsports personally emailed me and said they know of an AH3 that has applied the stage 1 tune on the car and it is working without issue. Stage 2 is still in beta so not many people even have it, that is why it is not known. Clear enough?

So basically they didn't develop the tune for the specific DME of the AH3, "someone" just bought it and it appears to work, for now. If this is such a legit tune for the AH3, why don't they advertise it as such on their site?

I'll let someone braver than me be guinea pig #2 for the Burger tune.
