So I took my car this week for its scheduled maintainence and I also asked the service advisor to check my speakers as the sound gets distorted sometimes when I play classical music (I don't have the logic 7). So he checks it and says that there is nothing wrong with my speakers (all good), but then he says that BMW stereos are known not to play recorded or copied CDs well. They play original CDs nicely, but once you copy it even directly from an original, the sound will not be as good. Wierd. What do you guys think about that????

My burned CDs sound pretty good on mine. However, if they are mp3 CDs I can't get the stereo to play past track 50 or 60.

Weird...I usually have a mp3 cd and easily plays past 50-60...heck, most of the tracks I listen to are like track number 60+

if you burn it from a shitty source i.e. bad quality mp3's or low bitrate than you will get crackling. I get it on my ipod when the mp3 is bad.

sounds the same. As long as you make sure the KBPS is at least 192 (cd quality)

One point everyone seems to be missing. What quality CD's are you using when you burn? I have had different results depending on the quality of the cd that I burn to. The CD-player seems to be a bit picky when it comes to reading burnt cd's.

I use burned CD's all the time. Sure if you don't have a good source the output sucks too!
Hey you guys with 60+ tracks, you do know you can divide your music into submenus and the drive will recognize them right?

I use Nero to burn it as regular DATA CD.

All you need to do put the mp3 in different folders on your hard drive.. sort them out first.. then use MP3tag to make sure the song name is clean... and use nero burn it with all the subfolder structure.

I can play song #1016 on my DL DVD. Just organized into folders as Shinchan states for ease of use.

that's BS. a direct audio cd copy is exactly the same as the original. It's digital.

+1 agreed!! The bit for bit info is the exact same IF you copy the file and do NOT convert to an MP3 file. Once you compress it some even to 192kbps there is some loss although not usually audible. I have made copies of CD and compared .wav file, 320, 192, 160, 128 KBPS and .wav or 320Kbps are the closest to original in direct comparison. However, while driving and with no DIRECT comparison you'll never no the difference.

As for the crackling noise I have found this to be the case with poor quality output(playback) or input (recording) devices or CDs. Last thing you may want to experiment with is changing the output level on the songs you are recording. If the output levels are too high then it will record distortion. This only happens IF your recording device or software allows you to change this and its set beyond "0dB peak level". Most like Nero do not allow this and record at exact "0dB" for perfect recordings. I have seen this happen with older Microsoft software but not recently.

My suggestion get Nero and record as standard .wav file or MP3 file with at least 192 Kbps and you should solve your problem!

Even if your peaks hit 0dB, it is possible that you could get distortion on some systems, if they have an EQ running on them. IMO, your peaks shouldn't go past -1 or -2dB, which really isn't that far at all from 0dB but at least it gives you a little headroom.

But otherwise, I agree with everyone. Your car should play burned music CDs or mp3s just fine. I also agree that a CD sounds better than mp3, even at high bit rates, you don't have to have a golden ear to tell the difference. Still, I prefer mp3 CDs because you can fit like 100+ songs on a single CD (no probs for me going past 50 or 60).

True dat,....EQ will also cause this. Turn off all EQ settings when recording. Just use them for playback.

Should have been more clear. Any DVD (DL or not) has to be played in NAV DVD slot.

I only mentioned the number of songs as not really being limited except what you can get on a disc and as long as you organize you can read and use all of them.

BTW I do have some CDs that others have made for me that have ~70 songs, not divided into folders, and my iDrive sees them all.
