Another IPOD Connector solution

EZlink cablefrom these guys:

PLUS a power 12V to 5V from these guys

~$30 for the pair it is a nice solution. The cable USB connection also transmits data. I'm going to talk to the EZlink folks about a shorter version in black.

I will hardwire the 12-5V power supply as it is currently too tall to fit in the console

That's what my girlfriend uses in her e46 with the aux-in kit. It works fine but having two loose cables is a pain. Also (at least on the one we have) the 1/8" jack is on a *way* shorter cable than the USB plug (like 8" vs 48") so I had to heat-shrink an 1/8"-1/8" patch cord on, too.
