Unhappy Is the dealer screwing me?

I went to order a jet black 325i manual with zsp, leatherette and xenons today. The sales man quoted me 33,900. He said that they typically wouldn't go more than 500 under that. Is that true or are they trying to screw me?

I don't know what actual invoice is. I was hoping some one here could give me a clue.

try getting quotes from different dealers. go back and forth is the best way. like dealer A ask 33k, then go to dealer B and ask to beat 33k and just go back and forth till you get your best deal

Invoice prices for all BMW models

Don't forget that most dealers will throw MACO fees of $200 to $400 on top of those invoice prices, and you can have a nice long flamefest on the forum regarding whether MACO is a "legit" invoice item or not. FWIW, I paid it. Didn't want to spend a lot of time haggling over $300 on a $40,000 car.

The quicker and easier way is to e-mail a bunch of dealer with a price you are willing to pay (I suggest you pick something reasonable) and just wait for one or more of them to say OK. No fuss, no muss. Quick and easy.

33,900 is basically retail. MSRP with those options is 33,995, invoice is 31,180.

I don't think that is too bad. I wouldn't say that you are getting screwed, but I think that you can probably ask around and get a better deal.

I called eight dealships before I ordered my 330. I got 1900 off MSRP and positive equity tradin on my 05 325. The best deal will generally come from the largest volume dealership in the area. It's certainly worth it to shop outside your immediate area if you can.

One thing, he's given you a key peice of information. Use it. He's told you they don't typically go for more than 500 less than he's offered. That implies that he can do at least 500 better. And certainly if the price he's giving you is MSRP, he can easily do much better than that.

If $31,180 is the invoice, then you shouldn't be paying more than $32,180 at the most. If the salesman's offer doesn't get lower than your limit target, walk out, there will be better deals. They usually call back too.

One strategy I've found works well is this:
Go to your local dealership and build up a relationship with the salesperson you meet there. Take some of his time discussing the car, test driving it (more than once if necessary) and asking questions. Speak to him about pricing to get a rough sense of where he's coming out on pricing (no haggling yet). Say you're looking to finalize within the week. Then, say you'll be in touch and leave.

During the next 2 days, contact all the dealerships within a 100-200 mile radius. Give them the exact spec of the car you want and ask for their best price. Hopefully you have a large enough sample where you get some good responses (maybe 75% will respond, of which 25% will be appealing prices).

Identify your lowest offer, lower it by a resonable amount ($100 for $1k over invoice, $200 for $2k over invoice, etc), and ask your local dealer to beat the new price. He'll have invested some time on you, and knows you're pulling the trigger this week, so he'll feel more compelled to meet you on price, as opposed to some guy who just walked in.

If he takes it, you're golden - best price and from the dealer closest to you. If he doesn't, ask him how close he'll come (imply you like him and really would like to buy from him), and based on that decide how far you're willing to go to get your car.

By the way, you can do all the price gathering and finalizing over the phone and via email.

I used this strategy and easily got $1k over invoice (not where invoice = invoice + MACO, the REAL invoice) in the NY/NJ area. YMMV based on your location.
