Post Pirelli P7 Runflats in Winter

I'm taking our 2.0D for a trip Brisbane to Canberra next week with a short 2 day side trip up to look at the Snowies (Jindabyne Thredbo).

Temperatures in canberra are al ready sitting at -1C at night but +15C durinh the day. Thredbo is randing from -4C to mid teens in the day.

Im getting conflicting advice about the suitability of the P7 summer tyres. My owners hand book say that they are not recommended for operation below +7C while Ive read other US Canada sites saying below -14C the tyres go roch hard and lose all traction.

+7C seems a bit low as the bottom end of safe operating temperatures. Even Brisbane can drop to below +7C in winter. Any comments on my need to switch tyres for a a 1 week period of cold weather.

Also is the standard engine coolant and wiper fluid already sufficent for sub zero temps.

Can't help you, but maybe call a southern dealer to check with them? I remember taking a trip in another car which hadn't had any modification for cold weather a couple of years ago and it wasn't an issue, but it wasn't using RFT.

Post back here when you find out, I'm curious.

Well I spoke to my Brisbane BMW service centre and they saidf to ignore the 7C lower limit (despite it being in the owners manual). The rep said that thats just in europe and that in Australia NZ these tyres are rated for much lower temps.

So Im not sure if the actual tyres are different or our standards are different. Either way I'll drive on them to Canberra
