auto-relock feature lock out?
Has anyone found any viable scenario in which one could accidentally lock their keys in their car (i.e., anywhere, that includes trunk) due to this feature -- specifically for non-CA cars?
There are many permutations to try, but it seems that BMW has analyzed this one very well. I thought that I might be able to lock my keys in the trunk, but still I was not able. However, I'm concerned that I may have missed something that I may discover at an inopportune time in my future! p.s. the irritating part is that if I had an audible lock alarm, I probably wouldn't bother with this feature, but I worry about situation of properly locking my car when I leave, observing the lights flash, continuing on my way and accidentally hitting the unlock button on my fob while in close proximity still walking away. |

I locked my key in the trunk the other day.Last time I did that was like 8 years ago.I dont know how I did it.I only opened the trunk and never unlocked the doors.I put the key down in the trunk and took my stuff out and shut the trunk.Locked out of my car.Called bmw assist and drivers door was unlocked in about 45 mins.I always thought you couldnt get locked out.Now I know.

I was specifically referring to a situation whereby the auto-relock caused a lock-out that would NOT have occurred if you had this feature disabled (sounds like your case would not have mattered).

Does it relock after a certain amount of time? I never actually read about that feature.I leave it off just in case.

auto relock? is that a new feature or something only for cars with navi or something?
I know my car doesn't have that I have a friend with a lexus gs300 and she's had her keys locked in her car by the auto relock feature multiple times, I must say though, she's also lost her keys in the garbage disposal somehow. |

strange... I've came back to my car and found it unlocked before
I'm really certain my car doesn't lock itself back up, I've found my car unlocked WAY too many times.... maybe mine has auto unlock instead of auto lock :-) |

i once got locked out of my car when I left the key in the ignition, and my chocolate lab stepped on the "lock" button.
Had to get her excited again to walk back and forth till she stepped on the button again to unlock the car. True story, but not what you were looking for.

I can't think of how it would be possible. The way it works is if you hit unlock, then don't open a door within X period of time (you can set it, I think), it locks again. As soon as you open a door, the auto-relock is canceled. So you couldn't unlock, open a door and throw your keys in, close the door, and have the keys locked in -- if that's what you're thinking.
Ward - this is a setting in iDrive, not sure if it's non-iDrive settings.

Hmmm.. I need to try this one out. I thought that I have had this happen where I accidentally leave trunk unlocked and I don't notice it because it doesn't lift up and then it stays that way. BTW, I assume that anytime that the trunk is physically shut with a "click" then it is locked, is this so? |

If your car is unlocked, then you don't need your key to open the trunk. If your car is locked then the trunk is, too, and you need the key -- either press the button on the fob or, if you have CA, have the key in your pocket.

+1 car will only auto relock if you unlock but do not open your doors, hence you still have the key.

With the car locked, I unlocked the trunk with key fob, and then waited ~ 15min and still it did not relock. So this seems to be inconsistent with your description and also sort-of inconsistent with the concept of the relock concept. |

Ledzep- I have not found this to be true. I have CA and if I throw in my key and close the trunk... guess what. It's locked! Good thing I had the driver's door open.

I'm not trying to swear I'm a complete authority on the trunk locking/unlocking situation (I generally don't toss my keys into the trunk and close it, so I tend not to obsess on this issue), but - here is what I know and/or think I know about it:
If the car doors are unlocked you do not need to "unlock" the trunk nor do you need to use the trunk release button in the car. You simply lift gently on the trunk exterior handle and you'll hear it unlock and you can open it. This applies to non-CA cars as well. If the car doors are locked, then you need to unlock the trunk. You can do this by first unlocking all the doors, and then use the procedure above, or you can unlock just the trunk using the FOB trunk unlock. If you do the former, then when you close the trunk (with or without your keys in it) you can still open it by lifting as described in step one. If you choose option 2 and unlock only the trunk, when you close the trunk it is LOCKED... unless you have CA, in which case I believe it should detect the key and not lock. This may not be true, as according to bartman32 the trunk will still lock. I didn't make any previous claims about the CA functionality because I don't have it. My guess is that the FOB needs to be closer to the ignition sensor to keep things from locking.

Sorry to rehash this seemingly dead topic, but I wanted to confirm a couple of things.
1) Can Auto Lock be enabled/disabled/time adjusted on cars with CA? 2) Assuming this is a YES to question 1, Does the car auto lock when you get farther away from your car and the FOB is no longer "in range"? My end goal here is to be able to leave the FOB in my pocket, enter the vehicle and drive where I need to go. Once I reach my destination I would like to just get out of the car, walk in and have the car autolock, without me having to hit any buttons on the fob. |

The autolock feature applies when you push the unlock button on the fob to unlock your locked car, but then don't open a door. After a certain period of time (adjustable), the doors relock. Lots of cars do this. My 10 year old Civic did it, but it wasn't adjustable like it is on the E90.
