Tint Question for NY Tristate Drivers
Can you tell me what percentage your tint is? I am trying to decide what would be good for me car, but want to see what the general answer is for my NYC tristate area drivers alike.

Im form the NYC tristate area and i have 20s on my white E90. I love it, i think it looks absolutly amazing. If the weather becomes nicer outside i will take pictures and post it for u if u want.
P.S legal tints is 35% in NYC but cops really dont care unless you have like limo tints all around. |

NYS law is 70% VTL (how much light it lets through) OEM glass is about 92% VTL 35% tint only allows 35% of light through. combined with the tint in the glass, 35% rings the meter at about 28-30% VTL. well below the minimum of 70%. most cops wont hassle you. unless you get stuck at a "seatbelt" checkpoint. other times it gives them an excuse to write you for a non moving violation instead of a moving violation. I got tagged at a fair amount over the speed limit, instant on Ka, the cop who pulled me over said....those windows dont look legal. he wrote me for two tickets, one for each front window. when he handed me the tickets, he said, remember, these are non point equipment violations, and to slow down. I've not had any problems with 30% all around on my 330i or the S60R, other than the above mentioned incident and a checkpoint. if its at night, make sure you turn your dome light on and open the sunroof. or have your windows all rolled down well before the checkpoint. I have a friend in NYPD who told me that they can technically write up a passenger car for all windows except for the rear window. they only do that if you really piss them off. 4 tickets @ 65 each.

35% all around (except front windshield)
Have yet to have a problem with it (and I've been pulled over at night for speeding with those tints).

i guess you like to have trouble driving at night...
dark tints look tacky imo. If i can't see through your rear windshield to the guy in front you braking and his brake lights, then its too dark. a fully blacked out car just doesn't look clean to me. you need the contrast, not to mention the safety of having RED TAILLIGHTS, and not black. Most people just have the front top strip tinted in NY and thats about it. tinting the front is just asking for trouble |

my friend got pulled over not that long ago and was told that the new regulations require 75%, iono if he's bullshitting. but i would go with 20's, cos if they wanna be dicks, they could give you a ticket no matter how much tints you have

exactly, your paying the same for 20% or 45%. If cops want to they can give you a ticket for any tint. I got 20s all around, and i think it is perfect.

I have 35% on the E92, and 30% on the E90.....
i got pulled over in the E92 with the 35% at night. First time in 2 years. first year i got the e92 i had 20% and got pulled over twice within 3 months, so i switched to 35%. Anything over 35% isnt even worth tinting. So i think 30% is perfect. |

its always been that high, 70% total, or about 75% in the film.

i would have gone way darker if i was to do it again...
a lot of people tell you to do 35% here...trust me that is too light. i have that tint and cops don't even give me a second look. I would suggest 20%...any darker and you might push your luck. |

If you have 20% all around you'll get pulled over in rough neighborhoods a lot. It happens to my friend all the time and not me since my front windows aren't tinted. 20-35 is the way to go IMO any darker and no cops really gonna cut you a break.

after getting nailed 2x with 35% on my prev car i went conservative and did 50%. looks oem from a distance, still blocks out the light, and most importantly doesn't attract any attention (been pulled over 4x in past 2 years and not once did the tints get mentioned).

i have 40 on the side and 30 on the rear windshield - not dark enough to get hassle. sometimes i open my sunroof to amid more light so the tints wont look as dark.
i believe in philly or penn state, you can only get a tint ticket from being pull over for other reasons. (example - speeding , reckless driving and etc )They cant pull you over just because you have dark tints. Correct me if im wrong You are pretty much beat in Nyc. It all depends on the cop if he wants to be a dick or not. But definitely start thinking about avoiding known check point areas once you get dark tints. PBA card usually will save your ass but like we mention before - it all depends on the cop |
