Question for NYC metro members - Park & Ride

I'll have some out of state visitors in late May or early June and one thing we want to do is spend a day in NYC... I usually take the train up (still and option but expensive for four people), but thought if I could drive up and find a good area in NJ to park safely and take NJT into the city that would be a nice option.

Problem is, I'm paranoid about leaving my baby (and probably my brand new one at that) somewhere I'm not familiar. Can anyone in the NY/NJ metro area tell me if there are good (pronouced "safe") park and ride areas where one could leave a car from morning until night safely?

Hello,
There is a self park on top of the Newport / Pavonia PATH station that has some nice rides, e.g. S65, A8, 7s, M6s, and a bunch of 3s. It's very close to the Newport / Pavonia PATH station, about 50 ft. The PATH is an easy / cheap way into NYC.

Nice! Thanks for the tip.

Any commuters want to chime in? If we decide to do this trip on a weekday, how early do these lots fill up? I would assume on weekends it's not as busy (not to mention the Garden State Parking Lot drive up)

or you can just drive into the city (arrive before 9am) and take advantage of the early bird parking special at most indoor parkings. Comes out to around $20 / day. you can always get around by subway thereafter.

The right way to do it in my opinion is to park in Hoboken by the waterway and take the ferry in. Plenty of Parking and a nice ferry ride to the city. Its not that cheap but well worth it. I have parked my BMW there NUMEROUS times and have had no issues. PM and I will give you more information. Plenty of commuters go that way so there is always activity by the waterway and you car is really never alone.

Some good suggestions here - thanks guys! I will probably follow up with some of you as my plans become more concrete. I just know I really don't want to drive into Manhattan.

then my plan works perfectly. The ferry drops you off close to times square also.

For all NYC/NJ/NY folks, not sure if you are familiar with this website: http://www.nycgarages.com/ I use it often to find parking lots and rates.
Hope this helps... I'd call first to make sure they honor the parking rates.
