DCT or not?

Been gone from the boards for a while... Has it been confirmed the 1M will or won't have a DCT option as a transmission?

Nothing's official, but you shouldn't keep your hopes up for a DCT option.

Basically it's 50/50. Only those who are actually involved in the project know the details so just wait 2 more months.

What makes u so sure south? Is it because of bimmerfile or david's post?

What if BMW decides to offer DCT later on and not for the initial release? Similary to what has happened for the TTRS.

Heck, just throw in the ye olde' steptronic. It's not like it is the worst automatic in the world or anything.

I'll be a little more on point this time...

DCT is a superb piece of technology, it works flawlessly, while managing to mimic that of a manual transmission quite well.

I can only offer my, subjective, opinion; I believe DCT, no matter how far superior to a manual, is dull. It removes the driver from what used to be a quintessential piece to the puzzle of a car's ability to function.

As long as I'm able to drive a manual, I will. I hate driving rentals, they're all automatics.

The only 1 thing worth noting about an automatic transmission is that it makes life easier in traffic, that's it-

I don't think this thread is really about MT VS DCT. I'm sure there are plenty of threads on that issue.

I gave my impression of one vs the other; I've owned only manuals and driven the DCT trans nearly half a dozen times.

My goal wasn't to start the dct vs. mt war; besides we all know MT is better!!

I'm just kidding everyone, relax-

If i may, i would like to add some data to this issue..

First, yes i can drive stick and love it to the umpth degree while getting my fix for ...lets say... enthusastic driving...

although i've never owned a DCT equipped car, lets say i have access to all the BMW's i want with DCT..

I recently got a 2011 128i with 6AT.... for reasons un imporortant to this thread.

I ve tracked the car at lime Rock and at pococno North BONE stock except for Tires ( running square set up RS3's 225-45-17 on 42 offset wheels to bring them out a little and help the understear.)

At lime rock i did 55 laps... was a whopping 9 seconds off the FTD.. bTW that was my FIRST road course event. I ve auto-x'd for years in a Miata.

At Pococno I was 6 seconds off the fasted time in my class... a totally modified s2000 with a real driver behind the wheel.

so too say that you cant have fun with an auto or a DCT is untrue.

It was a blast driving on the straight at pocono, entering in 3rd from the infield, getting to 5th and hitting 120+ before the right turn into the infield in 4th at 100+ before braking hard for the right hander. 3rd gear for the rest of the infield..

(performance note: car could use bigger brakes ) 2nd performance note....it is IMPOSSIBLE to mis a shift... or over rev.... )

is it EXACTLY the same as driving a six speed......... NOPE... But ill tell you, when i pulled into my pit stall after every session, i still had a grin on my face, and it wasnt from going slow or not enjoying the ride ..

too each there own, but to say you cant have fun with an auto or dct, is just plain not true.

and i get the wonderful pleaseure of driving in traffic in NY as its my daily driver..

Just my .02

p.s i was 4th place at Lime rock and Trophied 3rd place at Pocono

p.s.s im not bragging with the stats... just giving actual true data to the question at hand..

Regards..

The 1M will have DCT eventually, maybe not during launch. It makes no marketing and technical sense to leave out DCT. If i know BMW, there is no reason to leave out DCT as i don't see it taking too much engineering to make it work in the 1M.
