I know this has been discussed before, but i can't seem to pull up the info i'm looking for, via the search.

So i know how to set my ipod to play tracks randomly via iDrive, however it annoys me that it doesn't stay set that way whenever i turn the car off and back on. I have to set it back to random everytime i start the car.

Was this ever changed in a different software version? My car is an 06/09 build, and i don't think it's ever had any software updates. If so, is this enough of an issue for them to update the software for me? or is this not considered something that would warrant them to re-flash it under warranty?

Dont know if this will help. But on idrive, when in the ipod, click options and it will show a "random" box you can check.

Im sorry! I thought you ment you turned it on shuffle on the ipod.


On that note...if thats not what you ment...have you tried that?

hmm, no i haven't consciously set my ipod to random and plug it in, but it should be that way, because i pretty much listen to my ipod on random (outside of the car) 99% of the time. However, i'll give this a shot tomorrow morning i guess.

I was only able to get "random" to work on my playlist...so I made a playlist with everything on my ipod and it works =) (I don't have I drive)

ok, you guys are missing the point of this thread haha. I DO know how to set it to play tracks randomly, via iDrive. That's not the problem. The problem is that i need to set it to play random everytime i get in the car. Is there a way to fix this?

I have the same behavior in a non iDrive system.

My '07 used to switch my ipod from random everytime I started my car, as well as switch to FM sometimes. They did a software update and now it stays on random all of the time. It was so long ago though that I'd think your '09 would already have had that updated software. Try searching "6FL switching", I know there used to be threads on here about this issue.

Is that enough to warrant a free software update from the dealer? Or would is that not a big enough issue?

I dont think there is a way to make it stay on on turning the car back on. I have made a shortcut button using the numbered keys and it has made it much easy. Hope this helps.

really?? I tried to make a shortcut for it also, but it said it couldn't do it for that function or whatever.

Using iTunes:

1. Select all of your songs
2. Right click in the song listing window
3. Select Get Info
4. Click Yes on the "Are you sure you want to edit information for multiple items?" window
5. Go to the Options, and select Yes to Remember position

This *should* resolve the Random problem.

I have an '09 335i with iDrive and when I set random it does stay set when I shut off the car and restart it as well as when I change to FM and back to iPod. However, it will not stay set to random when I change play lists, groups, etc.

Maybe that is what the OP is noticing.

Mine stays set between drives. It only reverts back to normal when I manually select a different song, artist, genre etc. Still very annoying though, wish it would always stay set.

Hmm, i dunno if it stays on random if i switch to the radio and back, never really noticed (car's still fairly new.) I don't switch between playlists or anything. I actually don't even use playlists. I usually just leave my ipod plugged in all the time and whenever i get in the car i have to set it to random in the iDrive. I wish it would just know that i want it set to random all the time.

sooo, i think i solved this.

I've noticed that when i start the car, and right away try to skip to the next song, the ipod is not set to random. however, if i let it play for a while (like 30-45sec?), it then re-checks the random setting automatically. Guess it has to finish fully accessing the ipod's song list or something. Solves that i guess.

Not sure, I custom ordered it on June 16th, 09 and it was delivered on July 29th, 09. I haven't even brought it in once yet so no, no re-flash.
