Autocross "School"/Test & Tune - June 14

Anyone signing up for this? I am signed up and it sounds like it would be good practice for the real autoX events. They say you get a good amount of seat time...

Registration opened today.

Test and tune is the best. I'm upset I can't make this one, but it's definitely the event where you get the most runs in and can generally get comfortable on the autocross course.

In the info they say they typically take ~50 people, so you should good to go. We have a darn good 1-series showing already.

I am kind of surprised at how slowly this is filling up. I guess most people just want to the competition of a true autocross event?

I just want to get out there and have some fun, but to each their own.

Absolutely correct. The club does have loaners available. I'd let Larryn know early if you need one.

People who did this last year... is this a similar format as a normal autoX, meaning that you alternate working the course and running?

Is the course shorter-than-normal?
Do they have timing set up?
What are the practice areas?

There is not much detail on the info page.

There's not that many loaners. Go buy your own helmet.

Yeah, you alternate running and working - I think last time they had three groups - run, work, and rest.

When you're running, it's usually a short (~45-60 sec) autocross course that you can run as many times as you can line up for. There's timing but there's no announcer and they don't let timing issues hold up the running -- it's more for your reference.

They also have course elements - a slalom and offsets, sometimes other stuff - that you can drive over and over again, often without waiting or just waiting for a car or two. There are usually no workers on these, so if you take out some cones you have to drive back out and pick them up.

Really fun stuff, and definitely helpful. I'm sad to be missing this one but will definitely go to the August one!

Cool, it sounds fun. I guess when you are on the rest break, you can ride with other people as well.

When you are running, do you choose between the course elements and the autox track? When you are resting, can you also run the course elements?

Thanks for the info!

I'm not sure if they'll keep the same format for this year - Larry would know, I suppose.

But yeah, last year why you were running, you could do whatever. I think that running elements while resting wasn't allowed to keep the number of cars going now. You can totally hang out and go for rides, though.

I dunno about you guys, but I would use the rest time to actually rest. You can do ride-alongs, but part of the event is to have instructors drive your car, which I always found very valuable. You'll get so many runs in that you'll need a rest (I always did), I can almost guarantee.

Make sure you have a half tank as well. You'll go through that much, at least.

Btw, if you keep getting in line to do the autox course, you are cheating yourself of MAJOR seat time on the three obstacles too (which also generally do have a few cone workers). The obstacles will help you do individual parts a lot better. The Autox course is supposed to be there to show you how well you can put them all together. Do both, but you learn more on the obstacles.

Btw, we have 5 helmets, but they do get spoken for frequently. It's better (and cleaner) to bring your own.

It looks like we will have six 1-series there. Should be fun! I just paid.

Thanks for the advice Larry. Will you be there?
