Helmet

Hi,

I'm gonna take my car on the track for the first time next month in Sebring and need to buy a Snell 2000/2005 certified helmet. Do any of you have a recommendation for a good entry level helmet in the $200 range?

Thanks!

Well, I paid only $89 for a HJC open face Snell aproved helmet. I would not spend $200 on it but for that you could get a really nice one.

you can buy a helmet for $50 and also for $800. question is: is your head worth $50 or $800?

yes, there is a difference between motorcycle and car helmets. Car helmets are designed for a single impact whereas motorcycle helmets are designed for multiple impacts.

Get a descent helmet, you won't regret it if things go bad.

Get a car helmet.

I have an "arai head." You should be trying them on if possible, each brand fits differently.

You're going to spend $300 for a decent one IMO. My Arai was $650 or so.

If you think you'll get more into it, get one with neck restraint (HANS) latching points, or at least pre-drilling for it.

Most tracks ask for Snell rated (coming for car racing specs) helmet.
Being a doctor in a major trauma center (lots of bike accidents) I doubt that there is significant diference between two similar, let's say full face helmets, in terms of pure protection in a wide price range. Fit and finish, comfort and other parameters maybe different. If you need all the small differences in helmet quality to save you in a car crash on track, you may not want to live the life you will have after.
I went for an open face light Snell aproved helmet for comfort.

If you're going out with an in car instructor you might have to tuck a mike into the helmet. I'm not sure how hard that is with a full helmet (I have an open face). Sometimes the wind noise is a little louder in the microphone with an open face helmet. I'd guess an open face helmet is a little cooler. This might matter...
