Which IPOD sounds the best and fits the best for 1's?
I have a nano that I read will not work with the BMW ipod head unit for song read out. I have not seen the size of the pocket holder so I'm not sure which IPOD to get that would work the best. Also, a previous thread mentioned something about some IPODs not sounding as good as others with our cars. Tips appreciated, thanks!

The holder holds pretty much all iPods fairly well; none of them are too thick anyways. As for sound, I don't see how it would make a difference since it's going through USB. The only thing I could imagine would be that the shuffle wouldn't sound too good since it'd be connected by a headphone cable (and not use your USB/iPod option) since it doesn't have a USB port.

In other threads, it has been discussed that iPod's do not provide the best sound for the discerning ear. Apparently, the audio is sent via analog through the Line Out jack, and the USB connection is solely for recharging and interface communication with your iPod.
The best means for optimal sound seems to be portable storage devices that are not music players by design. With these, the USB connection transfers the audio digitally to your car's sound system. However, I believe the average person might not be able to distinguish the difference in quality. Someone did mention that iPods (certain generations) do have a pretty good DAC (digital-to-analog converter), so it may be pointless to use other devices--assuming the BMW audio system's DAC is as good or worse. The big question is how good is BMW's DAC? If it is indeed superior to the iPod's, one might be better off using a portable storage device instead for cleanest sound. |

Are looking for a playback device, or a storage device for you music? If you looking for a storage device to house your musical collection, then you certainly don't need an iPod. Just purchase an 8gig thumb drive. Coincidentally, the amount of misinformation on these boards is a tad disturbing. Since Macintosh (iPod, iPhone, iAnything) is highly proprietary and strewn with DRM, why people would buy or even use them as a medium is suspect. Using an iPod within a BMW requires a special cable because of Digital Rights Management. The reason is that the iPod/iPhone cannot output digitally is because then it could be copied without loss of quality. So the playback has to be analog(not digital). So BMW supplies the owner of their cars with a special iPod/iPhone cable to comply with Mac's DRM. Most sensible people have an external HD filled with all their Rip'd albums in the form of MP3's, that way no matter what computer they buy/build they can always have their movie/music collection independent of their computer. Then, you can simply drag and drop all the albums you want into a tiny solid-state thumb-drive for mobility. |

As stated - the USB thumb drives are an attractive and realtively inexpensive method of mass storage. If you want the iPod, there is a pretty good technical paper that john970 posted which is in a sticky thread in this forum. IIRC, it seems that the newer iPods do not have the same DAC quality as the older versions.

Another way is to burn MP3 files onto CD's. A CD will hold 650 MB of mp3 files, or about 125 average size files (approx 10 -12 music CD's). I have 8 GB of MP3 files that I carry in a small CD wallet. The BMW standard unit treats these as an MP3 player, with title and artist display, etc. It is another method for playing your music collection if you don't have the USB option.
