Zune not recognized

I dusted off the Zune -- plugged it into the PC and downloaded the latest version of software. I plugged it into the USB port and nothing happened. I selected USB from the control panel and it suggested that I plug something in to the USB port. I disconnected and plugged it back in, nothing. I selected Aux and nothing.

The Zune recognizes it is plugged in and that there is power at the port because it comes on when it is plugged in.

Any suggestions? This is not a big deal to me; because I have plenty of large capacity memory sticks and not that much music. I just don't want to keep tilting at this windmill.

My understanding is that the item plugged in has to be able to be recognized as a portable hard drive. The Zune will not do that. When you plug it into a PC it is not recognized as a portable hard drive without modification to the registry…and then only on WinXP or Vista. The hard drive can only be accessed when the Zune software is active. Unless someone comes up with a hack, the Zune will not be recognized.

Sounds reasonable. I am not sure it was even plug and play with XP. We have both XP and Vista at home.

The zune or any other creative mp3 actually dont work with vista, it doesn't have the proper drive. that could be the problem here? Not sure.

I haven't plugged it in to the vista machine and it works fine with the XP system. I will plug it in to the Vista machine when I get home. Not that it will help with the car not recognizing the Zune.

So I'm not the only one? :iono: It was a gift and so far it hasn't done anything, I've asked it to do.

Might want to put it up on craigslist as a posting for a trade for an ipod, pretty common.

First off I love my Zune but I am not happy with the fact that microsoft did not make it plug and play... You need to install the software before you can use the zune on either XP or Vista.. and since you can not install the software on your 1 it will not work . Sucks but it is the truth.

That's not entirely accurate (not entirely untrue either, though). You can get your Zune to show up in windows as any other portable drive would, but it takes some registry tweaks that I haven't bothered to do.

Yes that is true but as far as the 1 goes there is no registry to tweak..

You can still use it with the aux jack.. u will just have to scroll through things by hand on the zune.

yeah, but i really like the idea of controlling it with the car... it's ok, though. I have like 4 other players i can try. (i'm a bit of a gadget freak)

I think the most promising one i have is the Cowon A2... it works just like a hard drive when you plug it in to usb...and it has the same capacity as my zune...so, same difference.

My CA told me the Zune would "hook right up" and be usable through the stock radio display.. go figure

Still, I'd probably rather use the very intuitive Zune interface than scroll through the BMW radio single-line display to find music, so the AUX input will work just fine for me

Yeah without iDrive i'd just stick it in the cupholder and use the screen on it.

That is what I have been doing... I love my Zune...
Also love just how clear and loud it sounds through the basic stereo.. glad I didn't go for the upgraded stereo...

Zune sure beats the hell out of the neo-nazi Ipod... for my work truck i just use the aux port... i guess i'm not as lazy as some...

one gripe about the Zune though, is that it doesn't recognize all video types... which means the 78 GB of free data can't be used for my whole seasons of Top Gear or Music Videos...
