surcharge

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but when I bought my MINI ('05), every dealer in California added at least a $2K surcharge (except one who had a one year waiting list). Is this likely to be the case with the 1 series? Any suggestions about how to find one close to MSRP? Thanks.

That is defenintly a possibility for the 135i, but probably not the 128i. 75% of the members here are looking for a 135i. If you wait like 6 months after it is out you will probably be able to get it below MSRP. I know someone who bought a 6 Series for invoice right after it came out.

I suppose it's possible in San Francisco->San Diego, where they like to do that, but I think it's unlikely. People wanting a smaller car, would just move elsewhere. They would be putting the car at, or more than, the price of the 3 series sedan if they tacked on a few thousand. Remember you can easily get a few thousand off of a 3 series right now.

Wow, that's a really proffesional sounding term for it. Here on the east coast we generally refer to it as gouging!

Cars are commodities just like toaster ovens or dishwashers. The only people who pay above MSRP for a vehicle are those who let their emotions override their business sense. Or maybe they just don't have any business sense.

Garage List
1971 2002  [0.00]
2004 M3  [0.00]
2008 135i  [0.00]
My dealer quoted MSRP when I placed the deposit. Curiously, since then, some people have come in to the dealership wishing to reserve a 1-Series only to discover they would not be first on the list, then walk away. What's the term for folks like THAT?

I bought a new '05 Mini here in Chicago for less than MSRP.

I don't get it - if you live in an area where all your local dealers are d!ckbags, why don't you just call one somewhere else to order from?

To the extent that someone receives some intangible utility from being first and is willing to pay a premium for that utility, who are we to judge?

That said, I've only ever paid less than msrp and that trend will continue if I ultimately decide on the 135,

Don't get suckered into paying a surcharge. That's just absurd.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this is not an M3, and even if it was, I don't see many dealers getting away with charging over the MSRP. Like someone else said before, shop around, even if it's out of state

+1. If the dealer insists on a surcharge, find a different dealer!

+1... I'm not sure if there is limited production on the 1er, but I doubt the demand will be that high (in comparison to the ratio of available M3s and its demand). But who knows... I may be just talking out of my arse.

Question: When you purchase out of state, do you end up paying taxes to both states? I know for a fact that bringing a less than 1 year old car into another state will have to pay taxes in that state.

Shouldn't - at least it doesn't work that way between Kansas and Missouri - I pay taxes in the state the car is registered in.
