Bridgestone RFTs on the 135i

Looking at the high res shots again and checking the tread pattern at Tire Rack - they are Bridgestone RE050A II RFTs.

I actually prefer the RE050A Pole Position to the Pilots...but agreed on ixnay on the runflats. :frown:

I'm thinking not many enthusiasts will stay with runflats. We always get rid of them on our Minis.

I had the same tires on my Mazda and they were actually very good. Dont diss them just yet...

Although, looking at the new videos on the 1er micro-site, I think I catch a glimpse of tires that look like Continental ContiSport 2s like on the M Cars. But that is speculation on my part.

Not a big fan on those tires. I had them on my 350z when the car got bought back by Nissan for tire feathering issues. Hopefully they will hold up better on this car.

My advice: get rid of the runflats asap and go with a good (RE-01R, Azenis RT615) non-runflat max performance summer tire. Buy a M-Mobility kit for flats.

I'm not too keen on the run flats, but it's my understanding that the rims are specific to run flats and that switching to standard tires requires new rims too. Is this the case?

Run flats suck especially when it comes time to replace tires $$$$. I guess in the rare chance you had some sort of a blowout we all would be thankful we had runflats on the car. O well every car has some negatives about it.

Speaking of the 135i's weight too, those runflats are incredibly heavy (along with the stock wheels). I lost over 90lbs on my e90 330i by swapping to lighter wheels and non-runflats. It made a very noticable difference on throttle response and seat-of-the-pants accelleration feel. Also, those runflats are jarring sometimes on less than perfect roads. That was also addressed with the tire/wheel swap.

Hmm...interesting, 90lbs is quite a bit of weight to lose by swapping out. May have to consider that, but I doubt I would notice a difference since this car is going to be pretty damn fast as is.

I think you'd notice it. I noticed a 10lb per wheel reduction in weight on my (tweaked) S52 powered 318ti. That car is already pretty light (~2900lbs). I think the 135i should feel about as fast as that car.

And it is accepted knowledge amoung racers that each pound eliminated of unsprung weight, which wheels and tires are, equals 4 pounds of sprung weight as far as handling/responsiveness is concerned.

The cheap ones - that is the ones you can buy 2 for the price of 1 at.

Although I did drive the Viper engined Ram for a few days (nicknamed it 'barking evil' - the freight train from hell). It came with a set of Pirelli Scorpions with a 340 tread wear rating (on 22" rims, IIRC! ; -). Got 120' of scratch uphill in first gear and another 30' in second before I had to let off. Oh man - that stinking thing was fun - but when a company quotes EPA city mileage in fractions of MPG you know you're in trouble! (9.5 MPG to be exact. ; -)
