M5 CS vs M5 Competition actual stock hp
Does anyone know if the M5 CS actually has different tuning and more (dyno proven) horsepower than the M5 Competition or is the power the same but the CS is faster because it's lighter? I've searched the interwebz and haven't seen any side by side dyno comparisons for these two vehicles.
*Edit - I'm trying to determine if the engine/transmission tuning is different between the M5 CS and the M5 Competition. I added performance numbers from Car and Driver below. I know there are a lot of factors that can change the performance of a vehicle like different weather, track conditions and driver skill. C/D is one of the few places that I've found that has tested all 3 versions of the f90. Here are some specs according to Car and Driver M5 CS Power: 627 hp @ 6000 rpm Torque: 553 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm Curb Weight: 4096 lb 0-60 mph: 2.6 sec 0-100 mph: 6.2 sec 1/4-Mile: 10.6 sec @ 130 mph 150 mph: 15.5 sec Rolling Start, 5–60 mph: 3.8 sec Top Gear, 30–50 mph: 2.5 sec Top Gear, 50–70 mph: 2.5 sec Top Speed (mfr's claim): 190 mph Braking, 70–0 mph: 150 ft Braking, 100–0 mph: 294 ft Roadholding, 300-ft Skidpad: 1.02 g M5 Competition Power: 617 hp @ 6000 rpm Torque: 553 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm Curb Weight: 4237 lb 0-60 mph: 2.8 sec 0-100 mph: 6.7 sec 1/4-Mile: 10.9 sec @ 128 mph 0-150 mph: 15.8 sec Rolling Start, 5–60 mph: 3.7 sec Top Gear, 30–50 mph: 2.5 sec Top Gear, 50–70 mph: 2.6 sec Top Speed (mfr's claim): 190 mph Braking, 70–0 mph: 139 ft Braking, 100–0 mph: 281 ft Roadholding, 300-ft Skidpad: 1.00g M5 Power: 600 hp @ 6600 rpm Torque: 553 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm Curb Weight: 4288 lb 0-60 mph: 2.8 sec 0-100 mph: 6.6 sec 1/4-Mile: 10.9 sec @ 129 mph 0-150 mph: 15.9 sec Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 3.7 sec Top Gear, 30-50 mph: 2.2 sec Top Gear, 50-70 mph: 2.4 sec Top speed (governor limited): 163 mph Braking, 70-0 mph: 147 ft Braking, 100–0 mph: Not tested Roadholding, 300-ft-dia Skidpad: 0.98 g Last edited by 99-ls1-ss; 06-26-2023 at 11:45 AM.. The CS obviously has a lot weight savings over the Comp, so you’ve got a little bit of both. But again, the CS does have more horsepower per BMW. EDIT — Transcription errors from voice to text.

Thanks for the clarification. I believe the same still holds, however. There is a difference in tuning of the engine for sure, though I am not sure about the transmission.

Just as an aside, I know you’re discussing dyno results here, not BMW published numbers, but BMW does post (slightly) different HP figures for different markets, including the UK.
That’s a very impressive figure. Do you happen to know what brand the dyno was?

Think you'd have to see if anyone did back-to-back-to-back dyno runs between them to accurately assess the differences in power. I'd be highly surprised if the CS didnt make some number more than the Comp esp if they sell it as making more.

But the CS is always so much more than straightline times, would be the last reason to buy the car honestly. |

The output of these different cars is an average of the model group. They are all within the margin of error of each other. I bet if you dyno'd 20 of each model you would get a group of data showing that the output is about the same for all models.
You'd see more of a difference among stock VS tuned groups, where the output is raised a lot over stock ? 100 hp or more. Where as the CS at 627 vs the base at 600, 4.5 percent difference. Mike

Car and Driver dyno tested an M5 Comp at 617 at the rear wheels on a Dynojet, which is about 700 at the crank using the common 15% drivetrain loss. https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...no-horsepower/
Results will vary depending on the dyno so not all dyno results can be compared. Evolve dyno tested a base M5 on a Dyno Dynamics and made 631 rwhp, which is over 700 at the crank using the common 15% drivetrain loss. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/08/dy...mpetition/amp/ My guess is the Comp may have 1/2 psi more peak boost and the CS maybe 1 psi more than the base model. I tried a Comp tune in my base and noticed no difference. Have not tried a CS tune. |
