Door Closing (quality)

Anyone else think the sound of shutting any of the doors sound a bit hollow and unrefined? All of mine sound like I'm shutting the door on an '08 Kia Sorento.

22 model sounds fine to me. Good thunk.

Don’t know if it relates to sound deadening material. I noticed some X3’s don’t have insulation/sound dreading undef the hood either.

My MY21 sounds solid. Wonder if they made a change in production sometime between MY22-23?

That's not good to hear. I had no problems with my 2019 X4 but seems every day someone is saying there is build quality issues with the newer 22/23 year X3. I'm typically excited to pick up a new car, but this is starting to be a real buzz kill.

This piqued my interest, so I just went out to the garage and tried all four doors of our '19 and I'd give thumbs up on the sound of all of them, front and back.

I shopped many CPO 19s before I bought my 22. They sound the same to me.

Honestly?!?!.....people really care about the sound the door makes when it closes?

Back in the day, my 65 VW Beetle had a GREAT closing door sound....but overall the car was a piece of crap. But it's door's had a great sound!....LOL

It's funny what people care about. My 23 in some ways is definitely a step down from my 19. In other ways, a definite step up. Some of the stuff they arbitrarily ditched is irritating - puddle lights, cargo rails, and a 2nd USB data port off the top of my head.

The folks where I had it ceramic coated said it was top-notch paint quality, (BGM) which was good news.

I swear the default factory sound system doesn't sound as good as my 19 either. For a guy that doesn't really care too much about sound quality, my 2023 is lacking compared to a $350 aftermarket head unit I put into my 11 year old beater.

So yeah, pluses and minuses. Overall, it's a keeper just not at the same level of refinement my wife's Q5.

Luxury car makers do spend a ton on R&D for simple stuff like the thud of the door, because odd people like me care. If there's something I don't like it's the clunk and feel of the door handles. Much more plastic feeling than any of my previous 6 Bimmers.

It's funny, I have a 22 with a full complement of puddle lights on all four doors. This must be one of these silly supply chain issues.

I agree the paint is actually really great on my BGM. Spent a lot of time staring at it looking for high spots when I coated it. Funny how we've seen some very odd touch ups and scuffs on some members' brand new cars recently too.

I remember that there was a cutoff on the E90 sound systems in 2010 where they just arbitrarily started sounding like trash. I guess this is just a thing they do to cost cut when the bean counters intervene.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't being too harsh on the sound system in my 2023. Parked it next to my beater, a 2011 Buick Lucerne CXL (inherited from a family member). The Buick with the aftermarket Boss head unit sounds sooooo much better. That's either funny or sad, not sure which. The main reason I retrofitted the Buick is I wanted a rearview camera, like I mentioned, not terribly picky about sounds. Usually.

My doors sound just fine when closed. Nice thunk. Not as vault-like as my old E36, but definitely not "tin can" sounding like some people say

My ‘22 sounds fine. Maybe only slightly lighter than my previous GLC but def Not hollow or cheap sounding.

To be honest/in my opinion, MY23 door close sound just sucks : I miss back in the old day, BMW door would produce solid thunk when closing and I can feel that heavy weighted door

I wonder, with a topic like this if 10 of us were standing side by side and heard the exact same door closing, how we'd all rate the sound?

My doors sound fine overall, but I think because they are smaller and lighter than the larger doors on a coupe they sound less thuddy because of the smaller mass of them. I was nervous after I replaced all of the speakers with the Bavsound ones on my own that there were going to be all sorts of rattles from things I didn't put back together properly, but thankfully they seem ok.

Is it cause they're largely aluminium rather than steel? I think the X3's doors, bonnet, and perhaps front wings are aluminium.
