Winter Tires For X3 m40i
Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to this forum so I'll try to be as clear as possible. Backstory I picked up my 2019 X3 m40i second hand earlier this year as my first car purchase. The car came equipped with factory Bridgestone Alenza RFT 001 Summer tires but I live in North Jersey and winters aren't Arctic here but definitely not summer tire friendly so I'm looking for options. My car is currently equipped with the 20 inch rims with the following tire sizes.F: 245/45r20 R: 275/40r20. I have multiple questions. Should I get All season tires for my current wheels? If so should they be run flat or non run flat? Should I get different wheels for a set of winter tires? If so does the wheel size + tire size need to match my current setup? I've been looking for answers for these questions for the past few weeks and I'm seeing not much in clear answers but ambiguous "what works best for your car". Any help would be appreciated! |

I'm one who would advocate for a separate winter setup, whether a true winter performance or all season tire. I actually find all seasons to be great in our neck of the woods and with AWD. A second setup saves wear and tear on your nice 20" wheels/tires. Whether run flat or not, that depends on how comfortable you are. Do you have a spare? If interested, I actually plan to have a mint genuine 698M wheel/tire with 245/50/19 all season run flat (dot 0818), sensors, caps setup for sale next week. No damage or repairs. Less than 125 miles. $1875 firm, pick up in Lancaster, PA.

I would be interested honestly, but I'm still considering my options and id like to know if any of the three oem wheel tire combos are interchangable on the m40i or is every OEM wheel /tire combo specifically tuned into the xdrive/suspension geometry. This is my first non economy car so I'm more protective here. |

All the G01 (2018+) OEM 19" and above wheel/tire setups can be used on your 2019 M40i.

So my two questions to you about this would be:
1. Do you need max performance in the summer? That is, do you want to drive at 9/10ths? 2. Do you need max performance in the winter? That is, do you have to be able to go anywhere even in the worst weather (like say to a hospital if a Dr)? Or perhaps do you need to go into the mountains for ski/snowboard trips? If the answer to both is no, then get a high end all season like a Conti DWS. You'll lose out on run flat, but IMO thats a win anyway. And you won't have to swap tires in spring/fall. If the answer to either is yes, particularly the winter one, then I would strongly look into two sets of wheels. And get a set of rims + tires, so you don't have to mount/unmount tires all the time, and can just do wheel swap on your own with a floor jack and torque wrench. For winters, its better to size down to 19s. Use Tirerack or Discount Tire to shop for rims. Keep in mind its a pick 2 of 3: cheap, strong, or lightweight. I go for cheap and strong. If you do 19's, you'll find more tire selection in the 235/55-19 size than the OE 245/50-19. And while places like Tirerack will give a bit of crap about a non OE size, it will work just fine and they will ultimately sell it to you. |

We haven’t had a terrible northern winter in Jersey in quite a while and I don’t foresee ever necessitating going into rough terrain or mountains as I don’t have an winter sports hobbies right now. So I guess I’ll take a look at the continentals as they were already on my short list for tires! |

OP- I am in MN so our winters are a bit more extreme than NJ. When my ‘22 X3 M40i arrived with the run flat Alenza’s I swapped them out for non run flat DWS 06+ tires. I used Tire Rack. I just used the 698M 20 inch wheels it came with. We had a pretty nasty winter last year and I can guarantee you these All Season tires are more than enough tire for you. There is no need to invest in a 2nd set of really costly wheels. Winter tires aren’t needed unless you drive in really hilly areas with a lot of ice and snow. It’s an easy decision…just get some good All Seasons. The Michelin’s are good too. You’ll find dozens of threads on here about tires.

I had trouble getting winter tires when my early 2018 was delivered. Had to settle for 20” rims - wanted 19”.
Summers are 21” I have had Pirelli Scorpion snows - good but now that I am replacing them I have ordered Nokian Hakkepelita R5. |

Im currently running DWS's and have had 2 sets on my G37 but they do slip in the snow. I have all terrain tires on my Atlas and I just have so much grip in the snow or rain.

I'm assuming the brake geometry on to 2023 m40i is the same as the 2019 m40i. I may also be wrong since I haven't tried to mount them on the car yet. The wheels are Borbet Type F, not too fancy but very serviceable for winter salt, potholes, etc. I've "broken" more than one tire on potholes so I always try to drop to the lowest mountable rim with the highest profile tire I can find for the winter.

The tires are a new set of 19" Bridgestone Blizzak snows and TPSM's. Everything all in was just under $2400.00 Cdn. That includes mounting, balancing and installation. I haven't put them on my G02 yet, that will be during the 2nd week of November unless it snows sooner. TD

I'm on Long Island. The roads in the tristate are horrible at best in the winter. I have a winter set up 19" 691 wheels and Bridgestone Blizzaks. Saves my summer tires and wheels from the crappy roads, potholes, salt and winter conditions. Use them from November to March.

2021 X4 M40i Winter Set up Question
Hi All,
I have a 2021 x4 m40i with 21 inch wheels, it came with tires: 245/40/R21 front 275/35/R21 rear I took off those wheels to preserve them since winter is starting and decided to go with a different setup altogether for winter. I now installed winter tires and rims. I went for a 19 inch aftermarket rim and a tire size of 225/55/R19 front and back. The standard for x4 M40i winter set up as per the manual and other sources is 245/50/R19 However, everything fits well. And after doing research, 245/50/R19 is the exact same size as 225/55/R19, only narrower in terms of tire width, which i heard is actually better for snow here in Toronto. Since I am a new BMW owner, I just want to know if the 225/55/R19 is ok. It should not ruin anything with the car with time right? |
