Ride harshness going from F82 Comp to X3MC? (And low end torque Q)
Hello all. I'm considering purchasing a '23 X3MC and have heard a lot on just how harsh of a ride it is. There aren't any to test drive but I'm considering custom ordering one.
I have KW HAS on my 2018 M4 Comp and Dinan tension strut ball joints and the ride in comfort doesn't bother me or my wife at all. How does this ride compare to the X3MC? I just completed a 4,100 mile road trip in 15 days averaging probably 8hrs per day on the road with the M4 and enjoyed every minute of it. I also hear a lot about the lack of low end torque for daily driving. I never noticed an issue in the S55. Is the S58 going to be that noticeable worse? My F82 is a DCT. Basically, how will the X3MC be as a daily if I'm pretty happy with the F82 Comp as a daily (except for speed bumps in parking lots)? Thank you.

I had a stock f80 comp before the lci X3m. Honestly, I think the ride is significantly better, wife agrees (she hated the f80).
Low end torque isn't an issue for me. Some grumble the box shifts around a bit cruising on the motorway, can't say I've noticed it.

coming from an F80 lowered on Macht Schnell springs, the F97 LCI is so much more comfortable. not a “luxury” car ride by any means, but still a much better daily ride than an F80…. And I LOVED the F80 as a daily.

I feel like most people who say the suspension is terrible are coming from cars like Tahoe's or Lexus. I had a G80 and F80 and while its a little bumpy at times, the X3M rides great and my wife (or I) have no complaints.

I love the fact that people are actually praising the firm yet comfortable ride of the X3 MC. This is something I'm happy to finally start seeing more often. I'm restoring a 2020 X3 MC & have a 2021 X3 MC as well. Both sit on PS4S tires in upgraded sizes. The rise quality is just right in factory form. People complain about broken pavement & rough roads being harsh. But not here, the chassis on this car (or SAV) absorbs road imperfects quite well for a an SUV that's considered the M3 of the SUV world.
And low end torque... please don't get me started on this too. This is the "other" subject that's talked about way too much. If you want torque response in the lower RPM's feel free to get the B58 for around town fun. However, if you want a motor that pulls until redline & really sings at high speeds (where the S55 & B58 clearly drop off) the S58 is the engine of choice. Most FI engines can't pull all the way to redline the way some strong well built NA motors can. However, the S58 can do all this & more. It's on whole different level in many ways & a force to be reckoned with.

I just picked up my '22 on a 400 mile ride home down I5 in California. Smooth and rough roads.
It's not smooth like our X5. It's a sports car. Pretty much what I expected and it wasn't uncomfortable at all. Continental tires. That said, after hearing the feedback and concerns on the board it was critical for me to test drive one. I wasn't able to find a new one but I found a used one that I took for a spin. Online feedback is hard to evaluate, find one and take it for a drive. |

I have a 2015 F82 with the M Performance HAS and 2021/2022 X4MCs. In terms of ride quality, it isn't close. My M4 is far more jarring. And, in my opinion, the X4MC does take a touch longer to react when you get on it versus the M4 at any speed. The delay doesn't annoy me as much as it does others here but compared specifically against a F82, it is noticeable.
While I still love my M4, there is less anxiety using the X4MCs daily because I don't have to worry about ripping off my front lip. Absolutely different experiences though - F82 feels more raw in every way while the X4MCs are more refined. |

I agree the f80 is a much more raw car … but equally I'd say the X3m is a 'better' car

Loving the ride of the KWs. The car is a bit too low in my opinion and I may raise it a bit. I'm coming from a 2021 M340I xDrive, so I'm used to a stiffer ride, but 85mph over a New York highway with drainage grates was unbearable

Coming from the 2016 F82 Comp, I think the 2022 X3MC is smoother and better ride. I even noticed it was not much rougher than my previous 2021 X3M40 which had run flat tires. Really enjoying the X3MC.

True, the S58 doesn't have as much low down torque, but as a daily, even in D1, there's plenty of grunt. I drove an X3 M40i with the B58 for 2 years, and compared to that, the X3M feels plenty punchy.
To avoid getting caught out in a 2nd-gear-low-RPM situation, it's easier to just shift with the paddles. I've been mostly paddle shifting the last few months, and the low end torque issue ... isn't an issue. Ride quality... I had an Uber Black in a Lincoln Navigator last week. Driving on the same roads to the airport that I drive on daily. The ride quality was TERRIBLE. My wife and I were bouncing around in the middle seat, to where we were grabbing the handles. My X3 M is MUCH more composed on those same roads. Is the X3 M firm? Well, yeah, duh. But it's not uncomfortable for a sports car. |
