2016 328i Carplay
Hi,
My car shows incompatible for Carplay on BMW NA's website. However, there are some third party companies that can install aftermarket Carplay to my car. Why can't BMW install Carplay to my car when these companies can? Can I just buy a used/new OEM head/main unit with Carplay and have BMW dealer install it? I am little confused as why BMW says it is not possible to have Carplay in my car when it is actually doable. Thanks. P.S. I also have BMW navigation in my car. |

BMW says it's impossible because your headunit in your car (likely nbt Evo id4) doesn't have carplay built in. BMW does not install new headunits from newer model year cars in previous model years and can't enable carplay by software update to you, so by their standards it can't/won't be done
You can of course by a mmi box that adds carplay functionality by acting as a bridge to the headunit and hijacking the signal, which is something BMW would never install on their own. Or you can upgrade your headunit from a newer donor vehicle |

That's what I was trying to ask when I said used/new head unit. So, if I buy a new or used donor head unit, will BMW dealer install it?
Say something like this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/113400868051 |

Doubtful, and if they did they would charge you a shitload.

I have a 2016 328i and have been very happy with the mmi for carplay. Cheaper than a Android unit and retains factory look |

if your car has NBT EVO then Carplay is doable, you can even by a genuine FSC code from BMW to enable it. BMW won't activate it because their diagnostic system won't allow it "computer says no" |

Does your idrive have a list or tile menu?
Cars made after 07/2016 have ID5 Can't check since the car is at BMW service. I thought it could be done while at the service hence the question. Looks like not as easy with the dealer. |
