Probably simple: replace (not change) idrive knob

iDrive knob question F12 650i: I replaced my idrive with a used one from ebay, same configuration and also from F12, so a like for like part. But it doesn't work and actually if I push certain buttons it causes the restraint warning to pop up or the ac controls to go on and off. This is the second one with same behavior? Anyone can help? This thing is driving me to drink.

The iDrive knob is also an ecu which has to be coded to your car.
