759 Refurb and colour (color) change

I’ve been looking at changing up the 759 alloys, as they need to be recut to fix some curb rash, thought I’d look at tweaking the colour a bit to make them a little more, well, a bit more M Sport/performance looking.

My thought is to move away from the graphite and go towards the m performance gloss black to give them a bit more depth.

Also maybe look at acrylic lacquer options as well.

Will keep you updated on this project

Standard rim pics...

Ok, so wheels now dropped off at the wheel Refurb guys and had discussions with the guys on my ideas, of which they like the sound of.
Going to go for powder coating in the same black used for the competition wheels, which is a real glossy rich black colour. Then diamond cut the face.

As these wheels are a BMW Individual wheel, which is usually stencilled in grey, I suggested we go black, to match the bi colour, then use a 2 stage layered hardened acrylic, first coat clear, the second a slight smoked tint to pull the edges back a bit.

The guys said they use the same methods on McLarens and Ferrari wheels.

Should look great when done.

Should have some pics soon of the first stage, I’ll put them up if anyone’s interested.

So first step was strip back the original wheel, removing all paint, lacquer etc , then powder coat the rim in the M Comp glossy black ready for diamond cutting

The onto the the diamond cut revealing the contours and style of the wheel. One of the reasons I didn’t want to go complete black as it looses its beauty.

I can now see how much better the comp black looks agains the alloy, more definition and better contrasts.

Then onto the arduous task of placing the BMW Individual lettering onto the wheel. extremely time consuming process and very detailed to get it looking perfect. Opted for black lettering as opposed to the BMW factory grey as I wanted this to stand out more, plus also match the black colour now on the wheel. This will also make it more visible after the tint.

Now Starting to see how the final result will look,

next step 2 stage acrylic coating, bake and tints.....

Everything looks very nice. Do you own a shop or having someone do it? All of this sounds like a lot of work and $$.

I do agree though it will make a big difference for such a subtle chance.

Good work! Post up pictures once you get them on the car.

I m having these done by a UK company in Manchester, they do work for quite a few high end cars, like McLaren, porsche, Ferrari etc..

So the pic below is after the first pass with acrylic and tint, bake before and after each coat. starting to see the tint. The camera flash does make them brighter than in the real.

And finally a quick snap of the wheel on the car (will get more photos when I get chance)

When I first saw them on the car I initially thought they were black, but as you approach and change angle you can see the tint at work, reflecting the angles and alloy behind the acrylic. Fantastic results! I’m Genuinely very impressed and extremely happy with the final results!

Can I ask what company you used? I am looking at getting a set of knackered wheels off eBay and I’d like to get them refurbished up to this standard and I am only in Liverpool

Thanks

TK, I've had those same thoughts as I have the same wheels. They turned out great, thanks for sharing!

Did you ceramic coat these before installation? Perfect time to do it if time permits.

Reviving an old thread. How did the finish hold up? Do you have any other pictures that show the entire car with this finish? I'm curious to do the same with my 759's and would like some more examples.

Really cool finish, it looks similar to some "hyperblack" and "hypersilver" finishes I've seen over the years (at least from the pics you posted).

Have to ask: that project looks like a lot of $$; any particular reason you didn't go aftermarket?
