Replace, Rebuild or?
Hey guys most of you might already know my situation but for those who dont I got a 2011 n55 coupe and 4 days after purchase it got seized so I already took it to my dads mechanic and he said to rebuild it I would need to replace the crankshaft and its components so I dont know whats best to do I would really like to keep this engine because I know it only has 60k miles but if buying another engine is much cheaper then I would do that and I also wanna ask you guys I see alot of places online where they sell built n55 engines but is there someplace where I can send mine in just for a rebuild so its cheaper? and what do you guys recommend I do? as I said I would really like to keep this engine but if its too expensive I will have to swap it please let me know thanks!

100 % replace. Go shop for a used motor. Rebuilding is more expensive and potentially not as reliable. Especially since not alot of N55s have been rebuilt .

Im such in a mix now because the mechanic told me buying a used engine is a risk so I would prob get one with warranty

I'll chime in here... How much have you got Marty?
A used engine will be 2500 - 3 k. A rebuild from that place down in Houston will be 5 large. The R and R labor will be the same regardless of your chosen path. |

What I have is not really the problem even if I had unlimited $ to spend no one would go for the most expensive but since it is my dads mechanic and my dad helped him out a few days ago then he would prob do it for less you know? because he already opened it up from the bottom and he said this engine is new they where not lying to you it would be a waste throwing this engine away so thats why I am still not so sure

When my motor seized it was able to start again after sitting for a bit. Unfortunately I drove it in to my shop as I had no idea what was wrong with it, and by the time I got to the shop I was able to hear the knock. After talking with multiple techs and doing extensive research, if I didn't drive/start the car after it seized, I could've saved the engine. Though, because I drove it, there was a really high chance that the crank journal could've become warped and any rebuild would be money down the drain. That being said, make sure you do as much research as you can before making a decision. If its significantly cheaper to rebuild and your dad is confident everything will work out, then you do it. Though, personally, I wouldn't want to hold on to the car for much longer after an unwarrantied rebuild.

Honestly its hard to say without knowing exactly what the cause of failure was. Even knowing that, you can never be 100% sure if parts inside the motor were weakened, etc, causing issues down the road. When I was making this decision, the cause of my motor popping pushed me away from rebuilding so I was stuck with 2 options; used motor or new motor. Unfortunately all of the used N55s in my area were 50-60k miles and the warranties were only 3k miles. For a few thousand more, I decided to get a new motor from BMW with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. Be careful if you go used and make sure you thoroughly read all of the warranties that come with used motors. Many of them are different and don't cover the same things.

I see you linked a $500 "remanufactured" engine. You get what you pay for. Going for the cheap solution will most likely come with headaches.

Make sure you know what he is reusing and what he is putting new.. Because a used motor assembled in Germany for 3500 could last longer than a re-manufactured one by someone.. Just do your homework.. |

I think he just means a used motor. DO NOT use that guy in the ebay link, I haven't totally read into him but quite a few honorable members on here have mentioned that name and being super shady.
