Just got new 2018 X1 Have a few Questions!!!
Hello! First post ever. Surely not the last!
So I preread my Owners manual prior to the delivery of my X1, cuz OCD... I read and also heard about the usual customary 'Break in" period. There is even a Break in section in the owners manual..... However when I brought up the subject of "Break in" to my Sales associate, she immediately said, theres no break in... don't worry about it.. this is an X1... As if the fact that it was a BMW X1 removed the need to break it in.... Even though "break in" info is in the actual manual. I even mentioned to her that it was in the manual, to which she answered : Its an X1..... Sigh.... So thoughts??? Whats the verdict on break in? My wife needs to drive the X1 from Ottawa to Toronto (5hr drive approx.) and don't want to mess anything up with the new car... The other thing I found really odd is that she insisted that I use MID-GRADE fuel (i.e. 89). I said really?!?! I read and heard that I should be using premium fuel as in 91 or 93.... SHe said NO NO NO don't do that.. only use Mid grade..... I have had people use Premium and they had to bring their BMW's in blah blah blah .... that's when I saw a squirrel outside and got more interested in that that in her blah blah...... So thoughts on Mid Grade fuel vs Premium? Sorry for me surely rehashing existing convos etc.... Your input is greatly appreciated. |

The good folks at BMW took the time and effort to write the owners manual with exactly the information required to own and operate your new car. Follow it. Salespeople are not engineers, mechanics, or in your case smart.
That is of course unless you can find a TSB which revises something in the manual. |

As above
For sure, next time you visit the dealership, that person will no longer be there. Usual care for the first thousand miles, per the manual — don't rev, don't labour, vary speeds Use premium grade gasoline

Octane requirements are for maximum power, no engine knock operation even in the hottest climate (octane requirement is directly related to temperature).
If seldom if ever, do you call on the engine for Max HP and it's winter time...you will not need to use 91 octane....If you anticipate WOT runs in Phoenix in August...nothing less will do! |
