BSM F90 Competition - Pics and thoughts...

Hi Guys,

Sorry its taken a few days to get anything posted. As most of you know I collected the car on Wednesday at 3pm.

The dealer did a great job and understood that I wanted a swift handover rather than the 3hr time slot they allotted!!

Once into the car, the interior was even better than I remembered, the seats especially so.

I must admit to being nervous about the ride quality, I test drove the regular F90 for about 30 minutes before pulling the trigger on the competition, I figured that it would almost certainly not be as harsh as the 991.2 C4S I was coming from.

I was greatly relieved, the ride is fantastic. I honestly have found myself using the sport setting for the suspension more often than comfort. Comfort is not dissimilar to my Wife's X1 Msport (on run flats) in terms of harshness. Clearly it rolls a lot less than the X1

I feel that the MSport exhaust is a big step up from the car I test drove, especially with the engine in Sport+, its much louder and lots of pops and burbles, lovely - although I would like a little more (genuine) noise in the cabin.

The wheels, well, again I was nervous about these, especially being on a black car - how wrong I was. They look incredible, showing off the rotors and the blue calipers (no CCB's here).

Driving - this is limited to the 150 miles I have put on the car so far, and clearly I am still within the running in period so with the very rare occasion that I have used power to over take or to "utilise the entire rev range" it is phenomenal, it pulls from any gear and pulls hard.

As I am in the running in period, to keep the rev's at a reasonable level I am having to run in D1, however I will almost certainly be driving most of the time in D3, maybe with D2 for a more relaxing journey. Which the gearbox does not give the full mechanical "shunt" of the DCT I had in the 911 its still a nice firm (and fast) gear change.

Handling of the car, well, there is no getting past it. This is a heavy car, I have not pushed very hard in this respect yet as the tyres are too young. That being said, you can feel the weight of the car.

Its a HUGE car, about the same size (I think) as an A8 I had back in 2008, its long and wide but somehow when driving it it does not feel too large for the roads.

My wife loves it (phew) which is another bonus.

I have noticed that the Online Entertainment (with Deezer) requires some additional bass and some treble reduction on the B&W which I am quietly pleased with.

Negatives:

The handbook does not fit in the bloody glove box This is due to the air ionisation box (or whatever the smell distribution cartridge system is called). I am not using this as I love new car smell.

The biggest negative to me is that it feels a little lazy at times. I know that this is a saloon car, however when trying to pull into a gap at a junction there is relatively little response until the throttle is opened much further than I think should be necessary, this resulted in some wheelspin this morning (on an uphill junction joining the main road). I have tried in D3 to see if this alleviates it, it doesn't appear to do so. Does the car try and pull away in 2nd gear? (I know my old RRS used to).

I would say that this car is almost perfect for me, its almost like an amalgamation of some of my previous cars; 991.2 C4s mixed with the 5.0l S/C Range Rover Sport, Dodge Charger 5.7l Hemi, RX8 R3.

Its quite an amazing achievement from BMW. Oh and one other thing to note, it will almost certainly mean I lose my license, its so easy to pile on speed and not even realise it...!!

Looks awesome, congrats. On the hesitancy when pulling away, what throttle setting are you using? Try moving it up to sport or sport plus and you should have a more immediate reaction to inputs.

And get it into manual mode!!

Enjoy, stay safe!

Congrats on your car! Agree with above. You will feel a little turbo lag in comfort. In sport or sport plus it is pretty much gone and the power is immediate.

Throttle setting....assume that is the same as engine sport+?

If that’s the case I still feel it, however it’s my first large turbo car so assume it’s relatively normal?

Also, has anyone else noticed that the turning circle is huge? 😂

There's less lag in Sport/Sport+ than in Efficient, but it still doesn't feel as immediate and linear as a naturally aspirated engine, of course.

Regarding the turning radius - yes, it's a bit larger than I would have hoped.

Bloody love the car though. I’d not change it. What does everyone think of the black?

I have the Black Sapphire too. Nice metallic flake in the sun (but not as nice as Azurite Black). The car looks impressive in this color, although it hides the lines of the car and the carbon fiber roof a bit when compared to the lighter colors. The car looks better in Marina Bay Blue and Champagne Quartz in my opinion, but Black Sapphire is definitely nice too.
