F15 vs G05
Of course the new G05 is an outstanding X5 but I don't see too many of us F15 owners making the switch unless your lease is up or you trade every 3 years anyway. Why ???, way too similar of a visual look. If not for the all new chassis I would hardly call this a new generation of the X5. My 2004 was a refresh of the original. The 2007 was a new design, same as the 2014/F15. I keep my X5 for 200K miles so now I have something to look forward to in a few more years, I hope.

The F15 is a great car! So no need to jump ship early on a lease, but if lease is up and someone wants another X5...I don't think they will be disappointed!

I currently drive an f15 x30d M sport with m adaptive and rear air suspension (for last 3.5yrs) and want basically got bored of the tech and interior and also miss the smoothness of the gas engines of all my past bmws. I also wanted a big step up in interior quality. The g05 ticks all these boxes. I hate q7 exterior (too minivan like for my taste) and the lack of driver engagement of the xc90 (Imho a great car if you don't actually care about driving. Top notch design, utility and value) and hate all Benz interiors especially the tech. That left cayenne which would have cost 50k more similarly equipped (I like cars loaded with all the toys) or wait for q8 (which would also cost about 20k more). Velar was too small and rr sport is old tech and dated interior. A loaded g05 x40i m sport was the best option for me and got me actually excited about owning one.

I'm still not 100% sold on the G05 as a complete package, however. I love the interior, tech, and BMW's history of driving dynamics. But I'm just not sure about the exterior.......even though I've already placed an order for one. |

Yes, me too. I was even one of those guys when the F15 replaced the E70. I actually did keep my E70 because I really didn't like how the F15 drove. I am thinking about the G05 though if they have fixed the steering.

W.r.t the steering, was this more applicable on the xLine steering and suspension setup, or the M-sport setup or both?

I drove the xLine model with the standard suspension. The steering felt numb and over-boosted and the suspension felt 'floaty'. I was not impressed. Ended up keeping my E70 V8 which I still have.

I drive E70 and the major reason I passed on F15 was lack of feedback on steering. I test drove G05 and IMO they fixed it. Just waiting for the bugs to be fixed... and maybe they will bring diesel to the US again...

IMHO, the G05 is overall more refined than the F15, although I would not trade my 50i F15 for a 40i G05. I have driven both models and the build quality and overall driving isn't night and day but G05 is overall better. The only area where the F15 better to me is rear-seat comfort. I can recline and move it front and back. That option does not seem possible in the G05. You can code iDrive on the F15 which allows you to customize the experience somewhat including getting the full-screen CarPlay - which to me is a nice upgrade on the cheap for the F15. personally, I find the F15 looks a little nicer on the outside, but inside the G05 is quieter and the cabin is much more modern. My 2 cents worth... |

G05 is completely different from previous generations whereas the F15 was an overhauled E70. Built on the same chassis with revised looks and a few tech revisions over the years. If you could justify the slight differences from E70 to F15 then you could easily understand why most have gone from F15 to G05.

I traded in my wife's F25 2d xDrive X3 for a 2020 X5 xDrive 2.5d and I still have my F15 2.5d sDrive
I find the F15 more responsive as it slightly lighter RWD only and has 50nm extra torque. Comfort wise much the same even though the f15 is running on 18 inch std rims whilst the G05 is a Motor Sport with 20inch offset. F15 uses about 6.5l/100kms and the G05 about 7.5l/100kms on the same 260km weekly trip I do. Handling wise G05 streets ahead not quite 3 series territory but close, F15 wallows around corners in comparison. Technology of the G05 is also way ahead as expected and I am still learning at what it has to offer 3 months after taking ownership and I have owned BMW's since 1989. Quality wise I am not so sure there is that much difference only time will tell

Moved from an e40 to a G05 e45, it is simply miles ahead on quality compare to the e40, for once an X car feels like it was made by BMW German standards, one small let down the socket on the side of the car is somehow low in quality and feel compare to the e40! but the main difference with the new Hybrid is the 6 pot engine miles better of course add a battery range far more practical too, so if you comparing the X5 hybrids, massive improvements over the old one, feels like a complete new car as to an upgrade.

My F15 has the DHP so I don't notice any wallowing or sloppiness. I believe you absolutely need one of the optional suspensions with the F15, and still, I use 19-inch rims for comfort. With the G05, no such issue - at least with the M50i. WOW. It's impressive. My wife won't trade her Model Y for it, but I would. LOL. Last edited by FCX5; 02-15-2021 at 06:56 AM.. Reason: typo |
