First time BMW and ///M Owner

Hey everyone - Just wanted to introduce myself here and share my first ever BMW, a 2018 M5 in Donington Grey. I have followed and lurked the various bimmerpost subsections for at least the last 10+ years but never pulled a trigger until this weekend.

I currently have a 991.1 GT3 that I have used as my only car for the last 1.5 years. I don't drive to work M-F so it generally worked as my only car because it was only used on weekends. However, because I wanted to keep the miles low (I go down to MD quite often as my family is there), the GT3 isn't great in inclement weather, and I have a need for more space, I started looking for something to add to the stable.

I went to the dealer with the intention of looking at a new M2 Competition. My criteria for the new car had to be: 1) reasonably more comfortable than the GT3, 2) maintain some high-level of performance so I wouldn't hate taking it out, 3) have back seats, 4) generous trunk space, 5) usable in the rain/snow if need be. The M2 was very cool and I loved the compact size of it but at the end of the day it didn't seem like it would be the most comfortable highway cruiser for the ~450 mile round trips to Maryland and I wasn't convinced that it would be vastly better than the GT3 in year-round weather conditions...which led me to the M5.

After one drive in the M5 I knew I had to have it. It is supremely luxurious and comfortable with just a massive wall of power and torque that you do not get in the GT3, they go about their business in very very different ways but both equally enjoyable. Sometimes you don't want to wring the neck of the engine but just cruse (albeit at an incredible pace) and the M5 is perfect for that. Add in the kicker of AWD and I was sold. The car is a pretty barebones spec but the standard equipment is more than enough for my use case and I probably would not have ticked the boxes on the driver assistance package anyways.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to posting more and learning more about this amazing machine from you all!

Congrats on the purchase! Hopefully you will find the m5 just as pleasing but in a completely different way than your gt3! That is a great garage to have. If I didn't have kids I'd be rocking something like your setup!

I highly recommend it and you can get reasonable deals on them now. I didn't upgrade to the .2 because I would always spec it with the PDK and mine is also PTS Mexico Blue so that convinced me to keep what I have.

I absolutely agree with Gunga on the wheels. I configured them on my M5 and couldn't be happier.

Welcome to the "M" club.
