Thump on Downshift ?

2018 M5 First Edition. I don't know but I just recently started hearing a thump or clunk during downshifting for a stop or a slow roll. It seems it happens from 4th to 3rd while driving in automatic. I haven't tried it in manual. I swear I can feel the thump/clunk on the brake pedal when it occurs 75% of the time.

I am kind of disappointed that I have a concern coming from the rear of the car, diff, drive shaft, or axle? Let me correct myself.. I am actually pretty mad about it. It has about 750 miles on it and breaking it in as recommended, under 5.5k and 100mph. The farthest I’ve taken it was 4.5k and manual shifting about a whole 3 times.

I have a feeling this is not normal for this car so I just need a poll. I'll probably wait for the 1200 mile service. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks again.

Okay... I want you to please keep in mind that during the break-in period "as per the owner's manual" there might be abnormal noises coming from the differential, brakes and tires. One of the thing they do is to change the rear differential oil at the 1200 mile break-in service, also do a very THOROUGH inspection on all the components. That is a must have service as you might know, they will even do an alignment free of charge if you request that.

I also own a First Edition M5 and my break-in service was actually done at port and took them 2 days to complete it maybe the delay was due to an open ticket on the infamous fuel recall as well.

Just wait for the 1200 mile service and inspection before getting too worried!

Okay. So I took my FE to the dealer at 1k miles for them to check the thump or clank sound. Took it for a test drive with Papa Smurf and he immediately heard the noise upon stopping. He asked to pull over... pull in reverse.. and then back in drive. Once again he heard it and mentioned a similar issue with older BMWs.

Upon arriving back at the dealer he was able to find a known issue or BMW Bulletin for my car. It has something to do with the drive shaft and not having some type of locktight lube at the rear. The exhaust is required to be dropped to compete the work. Once again my FE is being torn apart to work on it. I'll be getting this fix at 1200 miles along with the gas tank recall.

I asked for a copy of the BMW bulletin but he refused to hand it over.
