RS7 to M5

I'm coming from an RS7 to M5. Will I be happy with the standard M5 or do I need to go competition? Anyone else go from RS7 and if so how has your experience been?

I suggest you test drive both and make a decision.
I personally like competition package more, it’s firmer
And better around corners with less bounce at higher speeds.

Go with CP, it has parts that pretty much can't be retrofitted, so you won't have to regret later on.

Competition if the price doesn't matter, hands down (I have the "regular" M5).

Also, from what I hear the lease deals are pretty bad on the comp, but again that goes to price.

FWIW, both are a significant performance upgrade over the RS7....the competition is just slightly more so.

I am happy with the standard ~Car, according to test drives poor roads are not handled well in the CP due to more hardness in Suspension.
Test drive on roads you use first. I could hardly here SHMEE on his test drive in the CP.

I have owned 2 RS7's and both were good cars but stock vs stock they will not compare to an M5 or the CE--- I have yet to see a CE vs non CE race or comparisons on a track with the same driver. One would assume its a very minute gain. If you are going to lower, tune, and go aftermarket with the exhaust; you might stick with "lesser" M5 LOL. Further, as mentioned, the leasing on the CE's are at 48% for 36/15k along with the non CE 2019's but the non CE 19's get 5k lease cash plus applicable rebates to soften the blow.

I traded my 2014 RS7 for a non-comp M5 a few days ago. For me the biggest seller was the performance (not just in a straight line, but more so in how it handles). Even though I am respecting my break-in and am only 1/3 of the way to that 1200 mile mark, I am in love with it.

You can't go wrong with either, I just didn't see the need to upgrade to the comp.

Enjoy!

I dont really understand why people pay an extra 7 or 8k for the comp. The performance gains are so minute..and I always black out my BMWs....not to mention the comp wheels are ugly, IMO.

Opinions vary, so I respect everyone's choices, but the comp just seems like a waste of money to me.

I am in agreement , the gains are largely unusable on the roads I drive, I am very happy with the STD car.

RS7 or not, just go for the M5 competition. The M5 (std) is such a sweet cornering machine already and the competition will stretch it this much further. The M5 competition is the best car ever, no doubt.

Garage List
I had just come from a 2016 RS7 and switched because of the handling. The RS7 would not turn or keep up with the cars power. It was frightening the first time trying to take a fast turn as it wanted to keep going straight.

The M5 is quite a bit more narrow and upright as well, which for me is more comfortable and allows you to see and feel a bit more connected to the road. The suspension in the RS7 seemed more luxury car than sports car, which the BMW is closer to. It took me a couple weeks to get used to feeling more of the road, but is definitely a positive trade off in order to get through turns in one piece.

The past few years the RS7 was the top of its class, now its the M5. Now with it having the two wheel drive mode and tuning options, it is on a whole other level.

Well, here you have it. Me going straight to an M5 having no swet at all going all the way releasing 600bhp in all directions. please try it, you'll be astonished.

I almost switched to a M5 the other day. There's a lot I prefer about the M5 but the RS7 is a bit better package in terms of rawness and exclusivity.

and you'll laugh at this but the massaging seats in the m5 are downright terrible compared to the rs7, heck even the 7 series.

it's a small nitpick but I drove home after test driving and didn't feel sad about it. I'll check it out again after the LCI refresh. so my advice is if you can wait then wait for the LCI and then you'll be able to compare that to the next gen RS7

I test drove the RS7 before the M5, no comparison M5 eats it in ever department, the RS7 is ok for straight line driving here in the UK the M5 handles corners way better and does not wash out if over cooked.

It is not absolutely true that the m5 can not be updated to competition, indeed the upgrade can be progressive, depends on how much comfort you want to lose ... I have personally analyzed with the bmw workshop the different parts and the identical ones. In another post I made the list, apart from the rear torsion bar and springs and front shock absorber (+ camber) nothing else significant for the trim!

It's not all about performance gain though, for many it's about having top of the line model.
