Anyone tried this boost leak tester before?

I haven't been able to find any mention of this kit anywhere, seems to be the only one "designed" for an N55 (looks pretty generic to me). At $40 the risk is low, what do you guys think?

Its not "designed" for anything. Its a pipe cap with a valve stem and a pressure gauge in it, stuffed inside a silicone coupler. You can make one of those yourself. Will it work? as long as the gauge functions it'll work, but all its gonna tell you is that its sealed up or not. It wont find the leak unless you add a smoke port or go through the system with a spray bottle of soapy water.

Yeah I made one out of a cheap fog machine. Just get some pipe plugs from home depot on the throttle body and feed the fog thru a vacuum port via an air compressor.

This looks awesome. I kind of figured this "N55 kit" was just made out of stuff I could pickup at home depot. Do you think you could help me out with a list of what exactly I'd need to buy for your setup? A local shop wanted to charge me $140 for a boost leak test. I figured I could DIY something a lot cheaper, and be able to test boost leaks for the life of the car. But I'm a mechanical noob, and the idea of tearing down the car all the way to the turbo housing myself is pretty intimidating.

Oh man it has been years but I can take detailed pics of it.

This is the fog machine I got but I'm pretty sure any of the cheap ones will work.

Thanks man - much appreciated! Right now I'm poking around on Craigslist looking for a used air compressor. I can't seem to find any consensus on what I should buy? I've never owned an air compressor, and someone, somewhere on these forums, stated a boost leak test should be done with a 5HP 5 gallon or greater air compressor. Sort of having a difficult time finding that, especially since I was hoping to pick up a used on for ~$50.

Your car does not leak boost often so it doesn't make sense for you to do this. Doesnt sound like you are very experienced with custom set ups. Take it somewhere to have it done.. 80 bucks instead of buying compressors and smoke makers.. for one time use

Yes, I have one. All it will do is pressurize the system and you will need to listen and feel for a leak. I was able to find my leak and fix it.

Teach a man to fish...
I mean yeah, I would tend to agree with you, and that's exactly what I was intending on doing, until I was quoted $140 for a boost leak test.

I have used mine many times on my car and for friends. The smoke just helps spot the leaks easier.
