Brake Pad Sensor

At what point does the wear indicator trip? My car currently says I have 2500 miles until the rear pads need replacing, but shows the fronts are still at 30,000. I know one front pad indicator was replaced under warranty because it shorted out.

At what point can't they be reset in the car? I'm shopping around for pads and rotors now, but wanted to ask the community what the deal is with the sensors.

I think that the sensor have two stages of detection. Once the final stage is triggered , you will have a red dash light and you will not able to reset it until replacement of the sensor. Usually the rear pads will get worn way before the front because of the DSC. I just changed the pads, rotors and sensors front and rear at 65 000 km

That makes sense about thhe DSC. My mileage indicator on the car shows I have about 2500 miles until I need a rear brake service. I've got to take the rear wheels off and actually check the pads, maybe the monitor is wrong. But at what mileage do the first stage trip?

The sensor is mostly triggered by the thickness of the brake pads, not only the mileage. You can do long highway distance and the brakes can stay like new or drive only short distance with DSC always activated by icy or snowy road and the the pads will worn quickly. You can juste cut the sensor and connect both wires together, then you will be able to reset the brake sensor. The car will think that you have replaced the sensor. But you must replace the pads if they have the reach the minimum thickness

Have you spliced the wires together on the x1? I've read in a couple of places on this forum that the newer sensors can't be bypassed like that

The mileage that your car tells you is simply an estimate (a timer) based on when it was last reset. The physical sensor triggers when the pad has worn down enough for the sensor to contact the rotor and break the circuit.

Yes, I was able to do it for a couple of weeks before getting the new sensor and replace the rotors and brake pads. I think the sensor are the same even for F series as realoem shows with the parts number

Makes sense..

Up until a little bit ago, I thought the mileage reminder was tied to the sensor, but it's not the case. I'll definitely be taking a wheel off and checking the pads before I buy replacement parts. Seems a lot of people have taken them off to find out the service reminder was wrong.

It's a good start. The sensor is located at rear right wheel and front left wheel just in case!
