F30 320d - is it sound of a timing chain?
Hi Guys
I hear weird swish swish sound from the engine. Is it normal sound ? Can it be a timing chain ?? Injectors ? or maybe something else ? Usually when engine is hot, it is not that loud and basically sometimes even on cold engine there is no sound at all. My car: F30 320d Sport 2012r Mileage: 82000mile Automatic |

Just don't wait changing it. Better safe than sorry.
My car did not had any chain sound or something. All normal. And i said i will not changing it until it will not give me one sign. Two months later. Chain broke without giving any sign before. No sound, nothing. ~3000 Euro repair in Romania where it's cheaper than UK. |

Don't be too hasty, the older N47s suffered with timing chains a lot more than the f30 where i thought this was quite rare?
I'd definitely cease driving it and get a second opinion though from a reputable specialist. This sounds nothing like yours: Out of interest, is your car well serviced? I have a 2013 320d SE Manual - I just got it serviced ahead of schedule, my specialist advised that the timing chain even on the older models only affected a small number (Internet makes it feel worse) and that the main culprit is not looking after it. The oil lubricates the chain (Unless i'm mistaken here) so good quality oil regularly changed will make a world of difference. Same on an old Vectra 2.2i Petrol - Had a 20k service interval to suit fleet owners, the oil got gunky, blocked the injector that sprayed the chain and guess what happens next? I'm servicing mine annually, approx 10k PA I do. 1st - 19k, 2 years 2nd - 38k, 3 years 3rd - 47k, 4 years Think that's how mine is at the moment, I will be servicing it next year at approx 57k too. |

It was timing chain. I prepared for you video with noise that broken timing chain was making(swish swish sound on background) and how it sounds after the repair. could be useful for one of you. Don't panic, the newer the car the lower the risk. Probably many cars are not affected but It is worth to listen the engine. In my case mechanic said that it was an early stage and probably it won't fail soon, but it could caused an impact of gearwheel on crankshaft which is unreplecable. All is good now ! |

Hi there, I am also hearing a swish-swish kind of sound but it's only after driving for about 30-40 kilometers from work or in the afternoon when standing still on an uphill. I don't get any warning messages or hear anything out of the ordinary inside the car only when standing next to the driving front tire. I don't hear anything but a normal diesel engine sound in the mornings and when idling the car after driving a short distance. I went to an RCI approved dealer and they are saying the timing chain issue was only prior 2011 BMW's. I got the 2012 F30 320 sportline and have about 186 000 km on the clock. I also changed my oil intervals from 15000km to 13000km
