Great post. It looks like they have already confirmed the competition package for the M5 for 2018. Seems kind of wild.

Thanks for the post and the translation.
It's just as I suspected, both are just so damn close. It's really only a matter of if you like blondes or brunettes, but they are both hot. I think that the Comp Package will edge out the E63S by another 0.1s in most metrics, which is hardly noticeable. I've sat in both cars now. There are certain things I like about the Merc and certain things I like about the BMW. One thing is clear though, there's really not much differentiating these two German Super Sedans anymore. Back in the day, it was if you preferred a 5.0L V10 to a 6.3L V8, two diametrically opposed ways of accomplishing the same goal with pretty different results. Now, it's a direct apples to apples comparison with each being so close in metrics, its almost hard to tell the difference. In the end, I find this competition comparison between cars like these today, in a word, boring. They both pretty much excel at everything now. There's really not many flaws one can point out between either of these cars, and if there are, they are minor. I am wondering if we'll ever see another "revolution" from either of these companies in the future in terms of producing a true Sports Sedan. I am guessing with electrification of just about everything on the horizon, this is the last attempt that will be made for the Sports Sedan before things become "quieter" both figuratively and literally. I am both excited and fear for the future, but for the next 7 years, I guess we'll have to live with these two Sports Sedans which are now the German 4-door luxury family sedan versions of the Nissan GT-R some people have been waiting for. I wonder what we'll see in 2024.

I like how the comparison is vs the "s" version of the Mercedes - this is already a win for the M5.

There is no comparison for me. E63s obliterates M5 as a executive saloon which packs tech, luxury, comfort and performance.

It seems like both BMW and Merc have created essentially the same car.

I've seen times for the standard M5 in the 3.1-3.2s range while the E63S is around 3.3-3.4 in other comparos. Surprising that they weren't able to eke out one or two tenths on the M5 in this test.
Also not a huge fan of the body language of either car. They just look a little too beauty than beast to me. Subjective opinion, of course. |

I wish the M5s exterior would have been bolder; bigger flares, etc. otherwise, impressive start pre-lci/CP.

You know when I first started reading the comparisons the community generally agreed to the "they're not comparable for X, Y, and Z" , or it was an "Apple to Orange" comparison.
Now that BMW has "stooped" to the AWD automatic arena, they've entered MB's established ecosystem. I think it'll come down to several aspects: 1. materials used -- not only interior but also subframe, chassis, and suspension components 2. sounds -- non-amplified, but pure chest thumping exhilaration 3. driver's feel/seating - where the driver is seated, how heavy/light the steering wheel is, it's respective ratios, and seat bolstering/comfort and, finally, 4. tech package -- not going to lie, auto braking, distance cruise control, plus Burmester audio -- hmmm Performance aside, and BMW reluctance to redesign the m5 body significantly, MB has a leg up in this duel. I'd wait for the Comp of course. Till then I'll assume someone's lease. -- Side note -- anyone use (lol) swapalease to assume another person's lease? Any tips/caveats the community can provide me? Thanks, H |

Strange... I'm a big fan of the E63S but to say it obliterates the M5 is actually a bit crazy. steering wheel doesn't fit in the e63s, the whole interior has an identity crisis and the two flat screen dash setup is to me the single worst design feature of the entire car. It just doesn't work for me. Performance wise they are almost identical. There is no obliterating either direction. Its a bit of a toss up and comes down to personal tastes.

It was nice to read that BMW seems to have nailed the steering [finally], at least against the Merc.

The stock exhaust on the E63S does sound pretty good though. I forget is there fake sound on Mercs like there are on BMW's? I really don't know.

After sitting in the new M5, I have to admit, it's the first time I'd take the AMG over the M. The very first time.... somebody from Munich with lots of BMWs talking here.
