New X3 looks good however that video was pretty uneventful as far as "off roading" goes.

Not sure if serious
8 inch ground clearance+no skid plates+ low profile tires=Mall Crawling.
Only a few?, city dwellers?, would think this vehicle can off road.
Its good for when you didn't see that curb in the parking structure garage.
or in the suburbs when your kid is blocking you in the drive way, and you drive over your lawn.
That's about it...........

Hardcore off roading I agree with you. But trail running the x3 is great. Every year we trek down to West Virginia for camping hiking etc. I usually do old overgrown logging roads and my '05 x3 runs like a champ. We even dared crossing a short old trestle rail bridge once in the hills of Pocahontas County. That was a bit of a nervous hair raising stunt.

Obviously not a rock crawler or mudder, but I agree with Mark M, that the X3 is a very capable trail vehicle. I've driven my X5 into places that hardcore Jeeps are wondering how I got there. It's all in how you drive if the vehicle has decent clearance and chassis rigidity.

off road capabilities lol, the car has almost no flex. That front left wheel coming off the ground like that isnt something you want to see.

Sad thing is, it felt like they were highlighting that part, like "ooohhh look how the wheel goes off the ground"

If you want a real off road vehicle, get a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road with a ladder frame and a transfer case that lets you select 4L, maybe even a manually locking diff and a winch. It is not meant to collect a moose in a swamp.
This is a luxury all wheel drive car. It will go through a muddy field, and from the looks of it, you can drive on secondary roads and in parking lots in the US northeast and Canada and still manage to open all four doors, not bottom out on poorly cleared ice and snow covered streets. You can take it to ski hills and not worry about the 3 m wide and 15cm deep potholes. That is what it is meant for.

cool video, like others have stated I really wouldn't classify the x3 as a off road vehicle however for the majority of people out there it will suffice for most of what they will encounter for the most part IMO

While I agree with your premise, the Jeep and Toyota are both better suited for making into a serious off road vehicle; primarily because the aftermarket parts are there. With that said though, I'd go head to head with either vehicle in its stock form with a BMW X5 and from what I've seen/experienced, the G01 X3 would be just as capable. Short of scratching up the paint, I'd take my X5 down nearly any trail here in Colorado; most off road driving is more about the driver than the vehicle.

The first is a beautiful photo. The second is an example of what I would not even do on a mule. In fact it reminds me of a mission that I was on in the Atlas mountains. By the time we got to that stuff we had to leave the camels behind.

One of the reasons that I am going back to an SAV/SUV is that winter roads where I live get ice ruts that can be 6 inches deep or more. My M3 spends the winter in storage and even my wife's 335ix has trouble with ground clearance. My neighbour and I regularly use her Suburban to pull people through.

My only worry is that my wife loves off roading. A few summers ago she took her dad's Citroen C3 on logging roads. We got up to a beautiful plateau Everyone else had Pajeros or Defender 90's. Only damage was a torn off licence plate bracket that I fixed that evening.

In boggy and slushy conditions where grip levels were low like in the Best Off Road Driving Trails in Illinois, the torque transfer between axles took just a few milliseconds. This allowed the X3 to slip in and out of muddy and wet terrain without issues.
