From 2016 M3 to 2018 X3 M40i
So I own a 2016 M3, it has been flawless since day one, still amazing to my eyes, BUT, my life dynamics has changed, now that Im single dad 50% of the time, I see myself in need of a family car...
So I have two options, buy an older bitter car or move to the new X3 M40i, my only concern is that this is it's first generation of its kind and that could bring reliability issues, and the TRUE M X3 maybe be right around the corner Im planing to do a test drive at my local dealer sometime this week... Anyone here in the same boat?

I am looking at the X3 and Macan to possibly replace my M3....
So, same boat, but I have an M2 as a DD and this would be mainly for skiing, biking, etc... At first I was going to get a forerunner, but I want some driving dynamics even in a vehicle that would be a third car. If I could only have one car, it would be an M3 with a hitch and snows in the winter. FWIW, my M3 is what I drive when I haul three kids around. It can be an all around family car, IMO. |

In resume, if the X3 Haul Ass and terms of power, has great suspension and looks great in person, then the answer is Yes if it doesn't check all those boxes I will be keeping the M3 and getting a bitter instead

I am changing my 2015 M4 for a X3 M40i. The main reason is that I have two motorcycle and the M4 is essentially a summer car (I live in Switzerland and we have some strong winter).
I need something more efficient to drive in fall and winter because I usually drive my motorcycles in summer. I'll miss my M4 but since I have only one car, I'm taking something more appropriate (4x4) for my daily routine. I have no kids, so I cannot help you that way but I can tell you that the M4 is not practical when you are four to get on the car with luggages. |

I have a X6M and thinking of getting a X3 M40 and M5, and I have two kids. I owned my X6M for two years now, and I don’t find it any more practical than a sedan except for ground clearance. A X3 M40 is not a true M, and you will prob miss the M3 so much if you sell it. I would just get an used beater just 4Runner or something, it’s cheap, also you can beat around it all you want and it won’t let you down.

If you can spare some time might be worth waiting around for the X3M, which will likely be a better replacement...

Something tells me you'd regret not getting the real "M" version...Or take a big bath trading in M sport X3 1-2 years after the M is released.

I am selling my 2012 M3 E92 competition package. I drove it in Switzerland for three years and it was a joy. Well to be more precise, it was a joy to drive in Germany, France and Italy. Switzerland has too many speed cameras.
Here in Canada I drive it from May until early October then it goes away. It is just not the same. I have had a F34 GT as a "family" car and it is good but coming off lease. The X3 M40i provides more carrying capacity, and with the trailer hitch the ability to tow 2500 kg is a real plus. I will keep my 2004 Z4 because it is still fun to drive on country roads. |

For some reason, the evil side of me told me the exact same thing... My good side told me "sell the M3 and buy a Honda CRV", and I tend to agree more with my evil side, that is why I have a KTM 1290 R parked next to the M3 :-)

Funny.
I'm almost in the same boat. Dad of two young kids, driving a '16 M3. M3 is great, but could use more space in the backseat and trunk. I also wouldn't mind all the new tech in the X3 M40i. I had a production number and build week for the M40i. But when the whole steering wheel shortage issue got me a bit peeved, and now my build is on hold. Maybe until MY2019? X3M is not out of the question, but I'm not really in the mood for an $85K car right now. I might be tempted by a Macan S, but I'd have to drive one first. |

Or maybe you just wait until you can drive the M40i back to back with other cars and see which one you like best, even with the sport wheel. |

I definitely don't want to seem dramatic about a freaking steering wheel. But after the seat, it's the part of the vehicle you physically interact with the most. It should be a good experience! I've had 3 M-sport or real-M steering wheels in a row, not really in the mood to spend $68K and go to a standard wheel. |

The situation sucks, but I figure if it really does bother me I can upgrade later. It’s worth the opportunity cost to have the car now rather than to go without for months to a year, even if I have to pay for the wheel later. I think the X3M is probably only 12-15 months away at this point, maybe I’ll go for a shorter lease and set myself up for that in two years. They *have* to put an M wheel in that, right? |

So, we M3 owners, we know, we cannot use all the power of our cars, even though we want to, really bad Ideally, we wish we could keep the M3 and buy the new X40M, but that is not the case for me And yes, I will definitely NOT buying that car without the M Steering Welcome to my world
