HiFi Sub enclosures needed!!!

After 7 weeks of waiting for my Bavsound Ghost subwoofers to arrive from the US, I tried to install them today only to find my base stereo, cheap and nasty subs are GLUED into the enclosures!!!!

After a bit of gentle prying, I managed to remove one of the speakers only to find no screw holes behind the speaker unit so ultimately the enclosures are pretty useless!

I need to get my hands on a pair of HiFi enclosures and was wondering if it's possible to buy this part from BMW?

If not, does anyone have a pair of blow HiFi speakers I could buy from them, or better still, a pair of sub enclosures?

So far yet so close!!!

Search and you will find out that plenty of forum members just drill the 4 woofer mounting holes in those enclosures...

This is what I thought but that's no good as the grill doesn't fit over the ghost subwoofer with this enclosure.

Any direction to photo instructions?

So it seems. This sucks! It's a shame you can't buy these from 3rd parties either....

You can order the HiFi enclosures. Check for part number 65139210149 and 50 for the left and right ones. ECS tuning and several dealer sites have them available in the states. I'm sure you can get them wherever you are.

That is the enclosure + woofer. There is no P/N for an empty enclosure.

It would be great if 3rd parties made the enclosures themselves, but I suppose the market isn't big enough for this.

Anyway, I'm still after the parts....any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

MDF spacer could help....I'm happy to adapt the enclosures I have but really do want the grills in place to protect my new woofers!

Cheers btw!

All you need to protect is some acoustic fabric to keep any debris off the woofer. It won't vibrate like some loose grille. If you want you can even fabricate your own grill using mesh.

Spacers are easy to make and some can be had off e-bay. If you don't have time for spacers you could make a fibreglass build.

Draught excluder is good to use between the enclosure and speaker sometimes.

Perspex is another option. You build a surround ridge that sits on top and stops debris or wondering feet. A guy used that method on his E92.

I managed to get whole units off ebay for about £27 each. I then pryed the speakers out. I didn't want to damage the existing ones in the car as one day I might want to put them back. BMW wanted to charge £150 each 😲

I'm not aware what the base version of the enclosures look like, but if you could source some Hi-Fi ones, maybe the process I went through my provide some hints:

So I?ve decided to adapt the base stereo ones that came with my car. I accept I won?t be able to restore them to the original base stereo setup but seeing as you can buy a pair of these for next to nothing, I figured it would be the easy option.

So here are the steps....

I took out the base stereo speaker unit using the metal trim removal tool provided in the Bavsound toolkit.

Take your time on this. I didn?t care much about the speaker itself but I wanted the enclosure intact.

You?ll then need to build a spacer from MDF. I bought a 10mm thick board and created a rough template.

I?m no carpenter but using my Dremel, I managed to create a perfect fit template. A few adjustments later, I glued the spacer in the enclosure.

One the glue was set, I was able to screw the ghost sub in place.

I took a few photos of what I did in case you need a reference.

I?ve yet to reinstall the speaker as the glue is still drying but I?ll give you an update as soon as I do....

Ok....next challenge....who cut the carpet so it doesn?t touch the speaker? Is it even necessary? I just see it causing early wear and tear...

Anything that touches or limits the moving parts of the speaker cone will affect the excursion of speaker and needs to be dealt with.

In other words, trim the carpet.

OK....I want to say that my entire exercise was an EPIC disaster!!!

The woofers were built in enclosure correctly but upon mounting them in the car, I found they didn't fit!!!

The seat adjustment rail was hitting the main magnet on the sub when I came to put the seats back on!!!

So, out came the MDF, and instead I installed a foam seal, and bolted the speakers to the enclosure without any MDF.

In other words, the spacer construction wasn't required and I made a MASSIVE mess in my garage cutting all that crap up and the whole exercise could have taken me just half an hour per side!

On the plus side, I have a nice new attachment for my dremel!!

I now have the Ghost subs installed and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

First impressions....

MUCH louder. The whole set-up sounds way louder. Way way louder. I can't explain why.
The bass is much punchier and Fleetwood Mac sounds incredible. I also tried a little Dire Staits and some house, and it's all much punchier, deeper and the car literally shakes when I turn it up.

I've only listened to a couple of tracks, but so far so good. Very pleased with my purchase, and the old base stereo subs are in the bin.

Based on your comments, good test for how clean the bass is would be U2 With or Without You and Yes Owner of a Lonely Heart. Difference in clean bass and just explosive bass notes.

Also Michael Jackson Man in the Mirror or other Quincy Jones produced tracks.
