My Turn for Limp Mode

Drove from DC to Boston last weekend (500 miles). After we arrived, I was pulling into traffic, lost power, car shuddered, and got the dreaded "Drivetrain malfunction. Drive moderately" warning. I shut the car off and restarted after a few minutes. It ran rough for a few minutes then went back to normal and the warning messaged cleared itself. No issue driving back, except I think my gas mileage was decreased quite a bit (not sure if that is related to the issue or not). It's at he dealership now. They said they would do a reboot and check it again on Monday morning after a cold start.

Hopefully it stored a code, transient problems are a pain to diagnose. Good luck!

Amen to that! I remember Linux servers that had over 2 years of uptime on average. The only updates that required a reboot were for Kernel updates - everything else could have the requisite processes stopped and restarted without killing the entire system.

That said - there could be several reasons for the OP's issue, so checking for codes will tell the tale - just like reading the logs for a server-based application that's having issues. Today's BMWs are loaded with computerized functionality, so it's not surprising that there's a similarity.

Got my car back today. Misfire in cylinder #2. Spark plug showed heavy carbon deposit. All 4 plugs cleaned, reinstalled.
