Assign profiles to 1-8 buttons?

In my last car, I assigned my wife's driver profile to button #8. That made it easy for her call up her profile when she drove my car. My profile was also assigned to button #8 in her profile so she could easily return the car to my settings.

In my 2018 440i, I get an error message when I try to assign a profile to a button. Has something changed? Is there a way around it?

Why not each use their key? This will call up the profile used with the key depending who unlocks the driver door.

You can check box for profile to popup when starting car. Then, you can easily toggle if sharing keys.

The spare key lives at home. If she takes the car, she is usually running a quick errand.

If she had a key in her purse at all times, it would confuse the car when I drive and she rides with me.

Did you try it? It works perfectly for me even when my wife has her key on herself. The car figures out who was closest to the driver door. Even if she is the first one to unlock the car on the passenger side, the profile will stay with me. Only if she unlocks the driver door will the profile switch to her key.

stupid suggestion: did you try to assign it while parked? (not moving?)

It's my car. She usually drives her Benz and only rarely drives mine. It doesn't make sense for her to haul around a key to the BMW, too.
