ID5 Split Screen Hack Question For Valentine 1 Display Integration

I have done some searching on this but have yet to find what I am trying to do. This is only applicable to ID5 hardware/software as that is what I have in my car and I am not familiar with ID4 software/hardware capabilities.

For those of you with ID5, you know there is split screen functionality - a primary side (left, 2/3 of screen) and secondary side (right, 1/3 of screen). What I want to do is mirror an iPhone or Android device on the secondary side when using the split screen functionality. I have Apple CarPlay, but CarPlay only uses the primary screen side, and the apps that can be used with CarPlay are limited. I have not tried the mirroring function that works with Android (I don't have an android device) but I suspect Android can only be mirrored on the primary side as well using the OEM BMW hardware/software. While most products on the market that offer similar functionality only work with ID4 hardware/software, I have seen other vendors with products that allow mirroring with ID5 hardware/software (the Avin USA touchscreen is one). However, they only mirror the device (iOS or Android) to the whole screen or primary side, not the smaller secondary side of the split screen.

So what am I trying to accomplish here?

The Valentine 1 (V1) has apps for both iOS and Android that allow you to display the V1 info on your phone/device. I want to be able to display the V1 info on my ID5 screen. Right now, the current mirroring options available for ID5 hardware/software will only allow you to mirror your device on the whole screen or primary side (as I mentioned above). I don't want my V1 displayed on the whole/primary side of the screen. My normal driving lineup is BMW Navigation on the primary side (whether actively using Navigation or not) and "something else" on the secondary side. The "something else" varies between the different options that the OEM system allows you to select there. I want to display my V1 data (from my phone) on the secondary side with BMW Navigation on the primary side.

In case you are thinking: "Why not display Navigation on the secondary side?". I would not want that as I want the Navigation to be more visible on the larger portion of the screen. And secondly, the BMW navigation system does not work that way. You can display secondary navigation data, including map data, on the secondary side. But the primary side must be used when actively using navigation.

This device here is an example of something that is close to what I am looking to do, but not quite as it will only mirror the device on the primary side of the screen - I want it on the secondary side of the screen. Below is a sample pic of the current ID5 split screen integration options available and a screen shot of the V1 info that can be displayed on an iOS/Android device. I think you can see how the V1 info naturally lends itself to be better displayed on the secondary side of the screen and not the primary side.

Any thoughts/ideas?

I believe split screen is iDrive software fuctionality therefore no way to get an external device to display on the split side. I would think your best bet is the AVIN as from I understand it, it replaces your iDrive interface and does pass through for things that are car specific.

Awesome idea though, I would love that ability for my V1

I have BimmerTech's SmartView HD installed and it can display an external source on the smaller (right) side of splitscreen.

Can you show a picture or video of that in action running an example app on an iOS or Android device? I originally went to Bimmertech looking for a solution. However, the two options on their site: Smartview HD and Smartview HD Flex, did not indicate any split screen/picture-in-picture functionality - and neither did the sample videos of the system in action. It was also my understanding that these two products are not compatible with ID5 hardware/software yet.

But if what you say is true, that will be exactly what I am looking for.

Here's a video on a X5/X6, scroll to 1:15 when the guy switches between all modes:

Note: If the original image is vertical and not horizontal, it doesn't get as squeezed when on the right side as shown in the video.

I'm not 100% sure if it's compatible with iDrive 5, ask BimmerTech to be sure. If the splitscreen "divider" is located at the same spot, I think it should work.

Thanks! That is essentially what I want to do. I will need to see if BimmerTech has made this system compatible with ID5 now, which was not the case originally when I started researching this project.
