Subaru Impreza Type R - MY97

OK, so I have an interesting question.

Currently I have a MY97 Subaru Impreza Type R, it has a 2.1 stroker engine running 360hp/355 lb-ft.

It weighs around 1200kg.

The M2 with DCT (mine arrives in about a month!) has similar power, 365hp/343 ft-lb but weighs 1520kg.

How much slower is the M2 going to feel than the lighter Impreza?

I think you're the one who's going to tell us how it compares

As a former Evo owner, all I can say is this - the BMW M cars were never about the fastest in a straight line.

When we had track days and drag races, the Evos - even mildly tuned ones tended to be faster than the E46 M3s which tended to be factory spec.

What you get with the old E46 and the new M2 is a sense of balance you don't get with the rally derived 4WD cars.

The connection between the car and the driver is hard to get right. The Porsche Boxster/Cayman arguably does it better than or as good as the M cars. But it's rarefied space. Imho.

And get into a high speed long sweeper, the FR M cars will really come alive.

The old Subaru engines used to feel faster than Evos too. But it was the way the turbo was spooling up. Nothing... nothing... nothing... then whoosh it smacked you right in the face. In many cases the Evos with a smoother spool was faster in timing but not in feel.

YMMV

I've owned two E46 M3's over the years, and to be honest, they have been some of the best cars I have ever owned.

I love the performance of my Type R, its very quick indeed, but its also very raw and not so comfortable.

I am hoping that the M2 will be as good, if not better than the E46 M3.

I'll update this thread in the future with a comparison between the Subaru and the M2.

I had a 1300kg 93 RX7 R1 running 380hp. Was noticeably faster than the M2 as it ran low 12s.
But you wouldn't generally buy an M car to drag race.

I had a Impreza Spec c (3 actually) before my M2. The last one was around 360bhp/380lbft and the M2 feels just as quick.

Interesting, I also had a Spec C, hawkeye. That was 345hp/360lbft and that was a quick car.

My old Spec C

And my current car, the Type R.

Ive since removed the carbon spoiler and scoop and gone back to OEM. Looks much cleaner!

Quite a bit slower in acceleration feel because

1. A 360hp Scooby from a 2.1L engine has a more pronounced turbo lag than a 3L twin scroll engine so the feeling of turbo rush is stronger

2. A 97 Scooby is a tin can. The M2 is a lot more rigid and solid and the chassis will not vibrate as much under power so will 'feel' less rapid

3. 200Kg of weight difference

4. Scooby Type R has a close ratio gearbox

You will need a 450hp S55 in the M2 to really trump your Scooby in terms of acceleration madness

Hard to say.. Subarus make big numbers but never seem that fast to me. 365hp in the M2 is closer to 400 bhp. Less drivetrain loss. But also less grip. They'll seem similar. The M2 might even seem slower from the lack of a pronounced turbo kick.
