I won't ruin it for anyone but I feel like Jethro hits on all major points most enthusiasts and members of this forum talk about when it comes to these cars. He is definitely one of the best car reviewers out there imo. Filling the gap (or rather sliding right beside) Chris Harris left behind.

The American stigma associated with the name Jethro made me do a double-take when I first started watching the review.

Great review and definitely agree about Jethro being the Chris Harris replacement. He has that certain honesty about him.

I don't get why people keep comparing the Cayman S to the M2. I cross-shopped them. They are not even in the same ballpark on price. The base Cayman is close enough to realistically cross shop, but the engine can't keep up.

Cayman S is $30k + over the M2. But, this was not a comparison of "value" but simply performance. If price is not an issue, the M2 will lose. When the "value" quotient is applied, the M2 wins hands-down in my book.

2 generations ago...

2 generations ago M cars were the undisputed segement leaders in terms of straight line pace. I just don't get how they lost ground here. To be outpaced by Audi is just plain wrong.

Still having said that, the M2 goes down in my book as all time great as far as M is concerned. I really hope the competition or CS package as a substance and price premuim brings more pace to the game without breaking the value for money positioning of the product.

I agree, having driven both the M2 (working for BMW), and being a petrol head - the TTRS is an absolutely phenomenal beast and no doubt that its figures are impressive but it lacks conviction in corners and with all your options isn't far behind the Porsche.

'Bang for buck' - the M2 delivers great performance and great fun!

A DCT equipped M2 would've beaten the TTRS time around that track. For as fast as the Audi is (probably a 120 mph trap car), it embarrasses itself on the circuit.

M2 summary.

weak brakes compared to BMW predecessors
balance too firm over firm bumps
manual box- awesomely fun involvement vs DCT lap time

I've said from the first time I drove an M2.. the brakes are SERIOUSLY disappointing on the M2 and really are sub par from what we expect from BMW M cars. He definitely takes the brakes to task after his track drive.. " pretty much Worthless... " very good descriptor..

718 summary..

manual box gearbox is sweet-
incredible balance-
engine is a disappointment compared to prior model
the car is right.. just needs an engine that is on par

opps.. I might have ruined it for some..

agree with you... he definitely hits on many of the points most enthusiasts have with the cars..

Perhaps you didn't hear Jethro when he said.. he doesn't care about the extra tenths.. he would rather have the MANUAL gearbox and be slower..
He also indicated that gearshifts and gear changes might actually be quicker with the MANUAL BOX in the m2 compared to the DCT in the Audi..

Being FASTER isn't considered to be BETTER by all.. that's kind of the point of the ENTIRE review.

in the final analysis.. The fastest car.. also equipped with a DCT.. lost out to two cars with manual boxes because they are more FUN

Just couldn't bring myself to watch all the videos. I did watch the HANDLING video and wanted to know, who drives like that ? and is power-sliding really conducive to assesing chassis predictability ?

So, out of curiosity, are the M3/M4 brakes also "seriously bad" on the track? Because they have the same bits, no?

I'm not convinced it's the brakes themselves, given many good reviews on M2 brake track performance with MPerformance pads.

Off track, these brakes with stock pads are just fine in my experience (although I don't like the dust so much). I've pounded down moutainsides and fade has not exactly been absent, but nothing horrible at all. That's not the same stress as a real track, of course.

I've bought substitute pads and will slap those on before track day here soon...
