Electronic Instrument display for the 3/4 Series LCI
Original article from Bimmertoday: http://www.bimmertoday.de/2017/05/03...w-3er-und-4er/
Apparently this Electronic instrument display is not available for the US for the moment. Multifunctional instrument display for BMW 3 Series and 4 Series The multifunctional instrument display complements the display concept of the BMW 3 Series and the 4 Series 2017. We have looked at what the MFID offers in detail. Behind the steering wheel of the BMW 4 Series Facelift 2017 hides a new technology feature, which will soon inspire BMW 3-Series customers. The multifunctional instrument display (MFID) replaces the classic analogue instruments and does not only have a high degree of modernity, it also offers some additional options. Our new photos show the digital displays of the 8.8 inch black panel display in different driving modes. The basic logic always remains unchanged and corresponds to the basic scheme of all BMW tachos for several decades: the speed is shown in the large round instrument on the left, the speed can be read on the right. The display of the info can now be changed significantly with the multifunctional instrument display also in the 3er and 4er series, depending on the preference and driving mode: While the view of the Comfort mode, which is active for motorstarting, corresponds most closely to the previous instruments, the representation changes The modes Sport and Eco Pro. In Sport mode, not only the basic color changes to red, the focus of the displayed information also changes. Thus, the speed is displayed digitally in the left part of the display and can thus be read even more quickly; the red "fill level" of the tachos scaled with the numbers 0 and 260 can also be seen from the eye angle. An indicator of the current gear is integrated into the speedometer, as well as an increasing red border for fast detection of the approximate speed level. Especially when driving dynamically, the driver gets even more quickly all the information that is relevant to him. The multifunctional instrument display in the Eco Pro mode is quite different. The driving mode designed for economical and consumption-optimized driving is accompanied by a blue-backed MFID and provides information on further efficiency improvement. The speedometer is striking only up to 120 km / h - higher speeds are, of course, also possible in the Eco Pro mode, but are not recommended for setting up new consumption records. An EfficientDynamics indicator, which is designed to motivate the driver to use the accelerator pedal, is replaced by the speedometer. If the digital needle penetrates the left half of the display, energy is recuperated and driven particularly efficiently. Despite its increased performance, the multifunctional instrument display for the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series is only one element of the driver's display and information concept. Information not directly relevant to driving, for example, the large map views of the navigation system, BMW sees better on the central infotainment display. Focusing on such detailed views behind the steering wheel would distract too much from traffic, unlike looking at the free-standing display in the center of the dashboard, such a positioning of the information itself would render a rudimentary perception of the environment in the peripheral field of view impossible. The head-up display is also recommended for the driver to take his or her eyes off the road during the journey. Here, relevant information such as the current speed, the current speed limit or the reduced navigation information are projected into the driver's direct field of view. Thus, the HUD not only reduces the driver's distraction from the traffic situation, but also counteracts fatigue of the eye due to the constant alternation of near- and far-focus. The multifunctional instrument display for the BMW 4 Series and the 3 Series can not and should not replace the head-up display, it simply adds a modern element to the display concept. It is available at a glance for a cheap 390 Euros, but it can only be ordered in combination with the expensive Navigation System Professional or Navigation Package ConnectedDrive. Photos

It's been out forever on the 5, 6 and 7.
Taken too long to get to the 3 and the 4 and it should have had a refresh really. I've ordered both the digi dash and HUD for my new LCI 440i.

Hi moff, out of interest, why wouldn't you go for the 435d? performance is very similar to the 440i but economy better!

why is the digital IC not available for US? it conflicts with HUD and violate US government rules/regulations?
I recall reading that somewhere but couldn't find the source so my apology if this has been covered before. |

Communication Issues between the HUD & DIGITAL DASH... once everything is squared away it should be available from what I've read sometime after July.

yeah this has been out for a while. there was a compatibility issue with the two and you could only order one or the other, but for the US they don't give us an option. we only get HUD at this time. when the issue is figured out they'll come with both. most people assume they were supposed to be bundled together anyway, but i haven't seen any solid details.

I was under the impression that the digital dash and HUD could not be combined anywhere in the world (especially in the US where the digital dash is not even available with any config!!).

My guess I have thrown out in a few other threads is that they planned to bundle into the exec pack (which includes hud) hence not offering at all in the us order guide yet. I checked in with genius at LCI launch (I plan to order a 440 as well) and they confirmed the compatibility hold and had no eta on availability. I have not followed up recently. |

Am I the only one who appreciates an analogue gauge?
Porsche is doing it right with the new panamera where the centre tach is still analogue

BMW's HUD has slowly evolved to add more info. The new gen 5ers and 7ers have a larger HUD with, I think, more info. Also, the older gen HUDs can be programmed with things like directional signals.

I've no doubt the 435d is a cracking all round car, the engine is no slouch, but the 435d is not as focused as a drivers car as the 440i due to the SE suspension and xDrive. I'm adding the MPPSK too, so great power and awesome sound. I'm done with diesels!! The B58 is a cracking engine and much better than the N55. I've previously owned a C63 Coupe and plan to get back into one in 2-3 years time.

I also think that most new cars will have a digi dash over the next few years so will help keep the car looking a little more modern when I come to sell in a few years.
