Do I need a key fob guard?

I did a quick search, couldn't find anything, if there's a thread or more info about it, I'll appreciate if you point me in the right direction.

I saw in the news that there's an increasing threat and opening cars with some devices that amplify the signal of your key fob. There's this thing call Fobguard that supposedly protect your key fob from getting the signal hijacked.

Is this **** real?

I would say no. I pay enough every year for insurance, not going to pay a dime more for a gadget to prevent it from getting stolen. If they want it, take it, I'll just get another one.

Theft is real! I don't know if you need a $30 pouch, but it could help protect the fob as well as the potential theft. A leftover mylar or home-made foil pouch might do the same thing for less.

A costco roll of tin foil should run 5 bucks and last a long time. You can also put it in your hair lol.

Kidding aside, it can happen but is unlikely. Don't think you have too much to worry about.

Thats what insurance is for. Just keep your keys naked like they are supposed to be and get a new car if it gets stolen. Hopefully you didn't put a huge down on a lease or anything.

Is the technology real? Yes. Is there any significant likelihood that a thief would go through all the steps to use this tech to steal your car? No.

They can also tow your car away on a flatbed--which is much more likely to happen.

You don't need it.

Hahah, had a good laugh. I just saw this on the news that they unlocked a car of a lady in DC and stole some things while the car was park in her house. The authorities believed they might have used one of this gadgets.

She probably just left the door unlocked but won't admit it. Cops make some random comment to the reporter about oh maybe the thief used some tech to steal the signal and the reporter ran with it.

If this pouch blocks the thieves, how exactly does it still work when you want it to? Do you take it out of it's little cozy every time?

I have no idea if you need one but I am 100% sure that I do not.

Pretty sure that if you use comfort access (touching the door handle), they'd have to be right on top of you to capture the signal. If you are using the buttons on the fob, that may enable them to capture the coded signal from a distance.

I've never had my key fob jacked and I've owned several cars with wireless keyfobs for 2 decades. A non keyfob car is very easy to steal as well and that's what insurance is for.

There are reports now in the US that a $25 devise is available in Radio Shack that can increase the antenna range in the car to pick up a key in the house. It's happening.

Once they start the car they can leave with it... once the car is off they can no longer start it as the key is out of range.

Guess we'll have metal boxes for the keys or put a steering lock on!

Can't control it!

Just keep your keys in your refrigerator. Problem solved.

It is true that thieves can now amplify the signal of your vehicle's key fob so they can easily steal your car, for example, keys may be on someones kitchen counter while their vehicle is in the driveway; the use of a signal amplifier will make the thief be able to star your car in the driveway even though the keys are in your kitchen, this process is easier than replicating the signal of your key which means it may become more commonplace in the future. As of now, the market has few solutions to the problem and your money may be spent better elsewhere.

A local TV news story several months ago actually suggested that, as well as the microwave. Building your own foil-line box was also an option.

so they go to all that trouble to replicate her key with one of those devices, which can unlock and start the car, but they take some change in the cupholder, and leave the car behind? Sorry--no.

And there are reports that one president illegally wiretapped another president. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
