My '13 328xi has been in the shop 3 times in the past 6 weeks

First of all - thank goodness for pre owned bumper to bumper warranties. I bought my car used with 49500km on it, I've since put 10000km on it. First issue was a few weeks ago where my engine thermostat failed. While at the service department, they found that the front thrust arm bushings needed to be replaced as well. $1500 worth of work later(paid for by warranty) I had my ca back running great.

A few days ago, I noticed a burning smell in the cabin and ta ton of smoke coming from under the hood. Turned out the valve cover gaskets needed to be replaced ($880). I got my car back and when I got home from the service department, there was even more smoke and I saw oil visibly leaking from somewhere. Back to the service department I went. Still waiting to hear what the diagnosis is but 24 hours later still no call from my SA with an update.

Anyone have similar experiences? My warranty has already paid for itself with another 2.5 years to go.

Had my turbo replaced about a month into ownership. Was making a funny sound but barely noticeable. It was super smooth process to get it all fixed up.

Eh things happen with any car. Unless you want to drive a Honda. Warranty FTW.

I had a 13' 328i x-Drive from new to about 28k miles and really didn't have any problems with it (other than squeaks and rattles everywhere).

Other than looking at the maintenance history on a car you really don't know how the car was cared for. If it was a lease it could have been driven hard or poorly maintained. Or you could just have got a lemon. It happens.

FWIW I've owned 4 BMW's all from new and haven't ever had any major service issues. Owning one out of warranty can be sketchy but there are extended and aftermarket warranties that can help put your mind at ease.

How many years have you owned them and how many miles?

08 135i - 14k miles
10 E92 328i x-Drive 35k miles
13 F30 328i x-Drive 28k miles
16 M235i x-Drive 12k (and counting)

As you can imagine I mostly lease so nothing over 40k for mileage but most often problems will surface within the first year of ownership.

Also, on all of these cars (except the F30) I've done oil changes ever 7500 miles so I'm sure that helped. All together that's almost 90k over 4 BMW's with no major issues.

I've had my 2013 328i xDrive for a little over a year, bought it at 52k miles, at 66k now.

So far, CPO repairs include: rear diff axle seals, passenger rear window motor, front cameras.

Elective maintenance has included: trans oil, front diff oil, engine oil x2, coolant flush, brake fluid flush.

Overall I've been happy, they've covered everything that should be and I've elected to do a lot of maintenance on "lifetime" fluids since I plan to own this thing a while. My CPO lasts until Dec 2018, hoping anything that's going to go wrong does so before then haha.

IMO, the big-ticket service issues start much later. After 70k miles or so. If you see issues within the first year, those would most likely be manufacturing-related. I was hoping you had owned at least one or two of them for >100k miles, which would give a true picture of reliability.

My car is currently at 60k miles with no major issues. Only had the hood latches replaced under warranty. Regular maintenance always. Hope it keeps going strong.

ON, that's rough. UT yeah, having CPO or extended warranty saves in the long run. It is why I have bought CPO myself. And while CPO is not a guarantee that you won't have problems, it does give some peace of mind.

The big ticket items are going to be related to the powertrain. Engine, turbo, diffs etc. i think those are pretty solid. Owning any car out or warranty is a gamble.

I plan on keeping my M235i so I'm probably going to get it CPO'd when I buy it off lease. That will cover me to 7/100k. It will be paid off before the warranty expires so I can put the money that I would normally use for my car payment aside to pay for repairs.

I'm sure at some point it's going to turn into a weekend car once I get the itch for something new. My advice is keep it if you like the car. If your worried something will go wrong out of warranty then sell/trade in before warranty runs out and get into something with lower mileage/less miles.

My car is already out of warranty. I am sure something will go wrong at some point, but I am not worried. I will keep doing preventative maintenance, but if/when the repairs get out of hand, I will get rid of it.

You could always look at a 3rd party warranty for peace of mind. I've seen some people on the forums with then. Not as easy as a manufacturers warranty but could definitely save your a$$ for big ticket items.
