Kind of a lame article, it doesn't really say much other than that BMW is conducting internal focus groups and soliciting employee input on features. Any company that isn't actually soliciting employee input is doing something wrong.

Especially when the source is a forum. Or worse, Twitter.

Rumors of BMW's demise would be greatly exaggerated.
But not an exaggeration regarding the "Ultimate Driving Machine."

I've been saying BMW is no longer the Ultimate Driving Machine for years, but for absolutely none of the reasons listed in this blurb.

Lose the heart of the enthusiasts and you lose the attraction of the masses and posers who spend the money.

Reviews of the 540i seem positive on the chassis. Especially C&D who has been skeptical of BMW. . I'm not sure you can put much stock in handling comments when driven hard on winter tires

The CD comparo with the 540i was not favorable to it's chassis or steering. And that was a RWD MSport with the adjustable suspension.

The first drive I read was overall positive. That's what I am referring to. I have not seen any C&D comparo yet

Edit: I see no comparo on the website yet so it's not posted yet if it had been written

I'm a subscriber. It's in the May 2017 edition. 540i, AMG E43 (this not the E63 AMG), CTS VSport, Audi A6 Comp, Jag XF S AWD. The BMW came in 5th in this group and in chassis last with 45/60 points while the Cadillac had 56 points and the Mercedes 55. 6 of 10 in steering and handling. It did well in the luxury aspects.

Yep, I read the same article. More importantly, for me, is the 540 appears enormous in person and weighs 140 lbs more than the E60 535 which, for me, was the last dynamic 5 series.

Interesting but not surprising. In my opinion the 5 and 7 should be like that, focused on luxury. The M cars and the 2, 3, 4 should be dialed in as the sportier choices.

+1. What's next, comparing the X5 to an F150 for cargo hauling?

For the record, the Cadillac came in 2nd to the Merc, and if I'm not mistaken, it was the oldest car in the comparison. If you haven't driven a CTS V-Sport, it's a phenomenal experience...it's everything the 540i is not (including NOT luxury...its one demerit...really the only reason it wasn't ranked 1st).

BMW was always known as the Ultimate Driving Machine for a reason. A 7 would make you grin. My friends and I went to a driving event over 10 years ago when Lexus came out with a new LS. We drove the S Class the LS and the 7. The 7 easily felt smaller to drive and had great steering feel and handling.

Even the last 5 lost its steering feel. The current 3 definitely. All the cars had a nice sense of being a driver oriented car. It was just built in.

Maybe the article is to get the culture back on track. Although uppermost management is usually the problem. Seems maybe they are pointing the finger at employees instead of taking responsibility.

Ultimate is a tough word to live up to. That said off the dealer lot you will most likely never come close.

Order the car with the right boxes checked & you can move well up the ladder towards the big U

Well it was the ultimate driving sport sedan for me.. BMW makes driver's cars
took the bmw over the mercedes, audi, & jag xe .. a head and heart unanimous decision

the closer upcoming battle would be the lean toward the M3 over the porsche..
