Bmw says I need an alignment balancing and tires are bent!!!

Okay guys so bmw quoted me about $2000 or more to get new tires, fixed bent rims and get an alignment and balancing. I think that's insane.

I can buy my own tires. I just want to know, a good place in NY/NJ where I can get an Good alignment and balancing for a good price aswell as what I should do about the bent rim or rims. They never told me which rim

Thanks

They should have at least told you which wheels. That said, why did you bring it to the dealer? What symptoms?

If you dont notice the vibration I wouldnt worry about repairing the wheels too much with a good balance. As for alignment any decent shop can take care of it for around 100, dont bother with the dealer.

You can probanly get a like new set of oem wheels/tires off the classifieds here and get an alignment for $1k total...

Sounds like they gave you the "courtesy alignment check" I wouldn't worry about it if it drives ok.

Soon after I picked up my CPO e90, I brought it in for routine maintenance and got the same talk about "bent rims". They cold-rolled all 4 wheels, did an alignment and balance. Still cost about $1k even with the warranty. I got the feeling at the time that it was BS, but it was my first BMW and first CPO, so I wasn't 100% sure and just went with it. The car felt a little more solid afterwards, but it could have been placebo too, and just the balancing itself that did the trick.

Definitely shop around and see what other places think first. If they are bent, as was mentioned, a set of used OEM wheels can be bought, installed, and balanced for right around $1k.

The three most common ways to diagnose bent rims:
  1. You feel it
  2. You see it
  3. You bring it to a dealer for something unrelated

Some of these ways are more reliable than another.

On average fixing bent rims costs $100 each, sometimes less, sometimes more, based on locality. Tires should come in around $200 each, an alignment maybe $100. But you won't get these prices at a BMW dealership.

New OEM rims are around $300-$400. Reconditioned used can be found for as low as $100.

Ask them. I would doubt their word that anything is bent if they aren't willing to tell you which one is damaged.

Honestly, it sounds super shady. Take in to us and do the work here and we'll tell you? I would get it independently verified.

I just ask my local place to let me watch the wheel spin on the balancer. Watch the inner and outer metal rim edge and see if it is true or if it moves.

Anyway, if you cannot feel it in the steering wheel or in your butt, it isn't bad enough to take any action. I can always tell before a tech would ever point it out to me.

I would highly recommend Crimson Wheel Repair in Edison, NJ. Honest people with good prices. I have used them once and was very satisfied.
