Rattle from exhaust valve on cold starts?

Hi,

I have noticed a rattle on cold starts when I have my door open, it sounds really bad for about 10 seconds before revving down and the rattle is less noticable. When warm I haven't noticed this at all.
I have JB4 for my N20 and I have set it to leave the valve open at all times.

Is it possible to mod the valve (without removing it) to make it quiet. Like stuffing some dampening on the rattling part?

Any ideas?

I want to be able to control it with my JB4 and I don't want the Golf Tee mod.

There's really no way to stop the rattle short of welding the valve open or doing something similar.

If you say you can control it with JB4, can't you just leave it open?

I have left it open in the JB4 settings. Which doesn't make a difference to the rattling. I'm thinking there's something (like a sprint/washer) that's rattling.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Unfortunately I don't know but maybe someone else will chime in. Mine rattles on every cold start for about 30s but I learned to live with it.

I had similar case and went to the dealer to have them look at this.
Ended up that the valve was deffective so they tried to fix it. Could not do it so they changed the complete muffler. Mind you, the car was under 80K kms and it was covered by the warranty.

I noticed a rattle on my car on a cold start recently as well (in cooler weather), it'd go away once I heard the valve. Reading this thread, I guess the valve is initially closed then opens - for some reason I thought it was opposite.

Went in for an oil change last Friday and they told me it was normal... what exactly is rattling? The flap?

I swear I might have seen you or a car with your exact colour spec on bathurst street in richmond hill like 2 years ago or something the colour really stands out.

mad props on the RWD 6MT spec. but I really hope you have some super dark window tints.

Thanks! I work at Markham/Richmond Hill border so maybe you did, although I only got my car early last year lol.

I didn't get a super dark tint, it's just right

I've seen this mentioned several times on this site in regards to valve position on cold starts and I'm unsure where this notion started. Why do people think something is happening with the valve on cold starts?

I have an M235i and had the same exhaust valve. There is is a TSB for it and the dealer replaced it under warranty. I gotta think there is a TSB out there for the F30.

I wonder if they'll replace a M235i MPE on my 228.
The issue is not related to the car, but you know how that goes.

It was just the valve that was replaced. On the 2 you can replace just the valve it might be different on the F30.
