BMW Auto Start and Stop Functionality
Does everyone turn on or turn off their Auto Start/Stop function? I'm hearing that it will strain your engine in the long haul. Is this true? Also, how much gas savings are we talking about using this function?
Thanks in advance! |

I will turn mine off in stop and go traffic but other than that I will leave it on. I like it when I get to work and park that my car is not running for the few minutes it takes me to get out of my car.
Oh and I did get it coded to be off all the time if I chose |

You could just turn it off when you park your car so you don't have to keep your foot on the brake. The car will stay on electrically in this state until you lock the door with comfort access or the key fob so you can listen to the radio and use the power windows, etc.

car is always switched to sport as soon as I start it, which disables the stop/start...but I don't think there would be much strain put on the engine if I left in on, car was designed for the feature

Turned off once I got outside Germany (when in Rome, and all that jazz). I never thought it did that much to save emissions and instead put a lot of wear and tear on the engine. I could be wrong about the wear and tear, but I dont want to take the chance.

Turned off - mine was coded to remember last setting when I bought the car. It can't be healthy.

I had it coded to remember last setting, and I almost never use the A.S.S. I personally don't like it.
The best case scenario (from what I've read) is about a 10% in savings using A.S.S vs not using it. |

Coded mine to be off by default. I'm not sure about strain on the engine but I do know the starter has a limited life cycle so I wanted to extend that as much as possible.

so i made my sport to only affect suspension and not the drivetrain and sport+ affects both suspension and drivetrain this way, start/stop still works in sport mode but not in sport+

Unless it's an electric motor, start/stop systems suck

I have MT and hate The auto start/stop. I think it's dangerous and a ridiculous feature to save a couple gallons of gas in the lifetime of the vehicle. I think of the poor starter. What did it do to deserve that?
So its always disabled. If it somehow becomes enabled... when the engine goes to stop my left foot instinctively pushes in on the clutch every time. |

I leave mine on with the MT unless in stop-and-go traffic.
On the AT I turn it off because it prevents smooth braking. Jury is still out on whether it's bad for the car. Right now it's all just paranoia. |

I believe the owners' manual does say it will increase wear on starter components. It also isn't good if you start up again right after stopping, it may start up before the engine stops spinning, etc. It's similar to launch control increasing wear, though the launch control is pretty conservative.

Just imagine starting the car 25 times a day, everyday...obvious wear on the starter that will significantly reduce its service life. Coded mine to be off every time I start the car. Most inconvenient BMW feature IMO...just like the AC/heat coming one every time I start the car. Otherwise, best damn car I've ever owned.
