428i or Ecoboost Mustang?
This seems like an obvious choice, but hear me out.
I'm a long time BMW fan, and finally I have the opportunity to buy a car. I'm looking at coupes around $30k, so sadly the new C class is out of the question. But for around that price you can get a decently specced 428i Coupe or a EB Mustang, basically loaded. What would you do and why? I much prefer German cars (especially BMW) but then again I feel like being young and trying new things is also the way to go and I'm so very confused... on paper they seem similar (many people compared the M4 to the GT even) but in reality im pretty sure they are two different beasts. If anyone can help me out with my decision that'd be super. |

The Mustang is a very good car and it is not odd to compare it to a 3 series but you are not going to get a very informed or unbiased answer on this forum. Drive them both, buy the one you like most.

I was on Maui in November for a week and decided to be like every other tourist and got a mustang for a week. Sure speed limit is 35 everywhere but after living with it for a week, I think it is a good car. If I was in the market for a coupe I would be taking a good look at one. And if I were to look at a BMW I would look at the 2 before I looked at the 4

Have you driven a two series? A 228 will be a lot more fun with a four cylinder than the Ecoboost or 428. If you buy a mustang, go whole hog and get a gt. I would choose a gt over a 428 all day. If you have the money, best coupe would be m2 or 240i.

Why not get an M235i (CPO) or M240i (new)? The 6-cylinder is a great engine and still gets over 30 MPG on the highway.

I own a 335 but I just came back from vacation and had a Mustang ecoboost convertible for a rental. I thought the car was great and the fit and finish was good. The engine had decent power but it did still sound very much like a four cylinder. The auto gearbox was its biggest weakness as it was sluggish and had considerable input lag in manual mode. I thought the steering weight and feedback was better than on my car. I like the quickness of the steering on my car with VSS but missed the weight and feedback from the Mustang.

Eco Boost Mustang and let me tell you why. There's a dealer in Ohio that will sell you a brand new Eco Boost Mustang for under $33,000 and with 500hp.

Is this your daily? I had a mustang, loved it. It was my daily though so the little things and quality added up and got to me. Would I get another mustang? In a heart beat. But it'd have to be a 5.0 and it would be a weekend warrior. Wouldn't be interested in an EB, not because it's not a good car, but because that's not what having a mustang is about/it's not special.. so many on the road. And wouldn't be interested in an EB or 5.0 as a daily

Neither will an E92 M3, unless it's pre-LCI and high mileage.

Looks wise..hands down, the 4 series coupe. While I LOVE the fastback Mustangs from 68-70, the retro look is played out now. The 2-series is a great car, but I can't 'love' the body proportions. Something to me is off.
The EcoBoost is thirsty. If residual is any factor whatsoever, then nix the 'Stang and go with the 428..toss on a piggyback/flash tune and call it a day.

I test drove a 5.0 Mustang and if the HWY MPG would have been in the high 20's I would have gone with it versus the 230i I ended up ordering.
My thing about the Stang was that if you don't go 5.0, it ain't worth going at all... BTW, I think the 4 series looks classier than the 2 series, but I'd rather take the better performance of the 2 over the 4. Plus, being that I wanted a convertible, I didn't want a hardtop vert. Go test drive them all and see what you like the best. It's not chump change you're spending so make sure you'll be happy with whatever you end up with.

For the amount you are willing to pay - mustang. The 4 series is a poor value in comparison considering the options that money will get you on the ford. Honestly until bmw comes out with next gen models current 3 and 4 series and options are overpriced for what they are, mostly the result of an aging platform and the rest of the industry catching up.
With all these people on the bmw forums telling you mustang I think you have your answer. |

I would not buy the ecoboost mustang. To be honest, I'd get a loaded civic coupe turbo over the ecoboost mustang. A member of my family has the latest Mustang GT and I have spent close to 80+ hours in it - the car is an absolute animal. However, there are plastic parts everywhere and the interior fit and finish isn't comparable to the 4 series. There is also a plethora of information out there citing the issues people have with the ecoboost engine on the mustang. Watch a few YouTube videos about it. While I am all for and absolutely love turbo 4 engines, the Mustang is best kept GT variant or higher.

I have both a modified ecoboost mustang and an F30. Trust me, the ecoboost mustang is a way better value for money than a 428i. In fact, for the cost of a used 428i, you could get a used S550 GT 5.0. I'd get that over a 428i a hundred times over.
